Event Marketing Suggestions Requested

I represent an agency that facilitates educational family and school-related seminars, conferences, and webinars. Because of budgetary and health concerns, we recently decided to focus most of our attention on the delivery of live interactive webinars. However, marketing has been a real issue. We have been experimenting with mainly free online marketing sources to advertise our webinars with limited to no success. We have been finding it very difficult getting people to sign up for our paid and free webinars. For our paid webinars, we decided to keep our fee low in hopes of attracting people to our webinars. We also offer a free gift to those that attend a webinar. We have used the following free tools to promote our webinars:

1) Postings on free webinar sites.
2) Free online press releases.
3) Free event calendar postings on both media as well as family-oriented websites.
4) Media press release emailings.
5) Newletter emailings to our subscribers.
6) Postings on major social networking sites that we currently have a business page with such as Facebook and Twitter.

We've also tried some paid advertising services:

1) Facebook ads
2) Google adwords
3) I also once placed an ad on a parenting website. They listed my ad on their website's yellow pages or resource section located fairly deep within their site.
4) We also once hired an SEO agency to optimize our website. They charged us $1,000.00 a month for their services and we received little to no results. We subsequently discontinued our relationship with them.

All of the above marketing techniques basically have not been effective in getting people to register for our webinars. Because the majority of our advertising has been free, I tend to believe that we simply are not advertising these webinars correctly.

I have read several articles that state that advertising on social networks are very effective in drawing people to webinars. However, my knowledge of social networking sites is limited. Short of listing the webinars on our business page of the network, I'm not sure how else I can attract people to our webinars using social networking sites. We have a business page on Facebook and Twitter. Since these pages were put up relatively recently, we have very few followers.

Our budget is limited and I know that there are vast advertising opportunities on the Internet.

1) Does anyone have any suggestions of other paid advertising opportunities that I should consider that might be effective in drawing people to our webinars?
2) Should I consider hiring an event promoter or marketer that could help point us in the right direction regarding online advertising? If so, does anyone have any recommendations of reputable event marketing agencies or independent contractors that I should consider hiring?
3) Is there any other marketing opportunity that I haven't mentioned that I should consider?

Are these events for the educators or the parents?

Is this geared to a specific demographic location, or a country?

Also, could you give us a web address so we might see what you are promoting exactly? This can help to narrow down where you should be going to promote your offer.

Are you trying to monetize by selling the webinars themselves, or are you selling something in the webinar?

Thank you for your reply. Below are answers to your questions:

The webinars that we are currently promoting are geared toward parents, SuddenComplianceWebinars.com. We are promoting these webinars nationally. We will also begin promoting webinars specific to school personnel. We are trying to sell the webinars themselves.

Yes, come to chat on Friday.

Ok, so as a parent I have a kid named little Tommy. Little Tommy is a "handful" so information from your webinar is going to give me tips on how to get little Tommy under control.

        1) Does anyone have any suggestions of other paid advertising opportunities that I should consider that might be effective in drawing people to our webinars?
MSN and yahoo have ads as well - and they are typically a lot less than Google. I don't know what your ads looked like, or if you had any conversions on them at all so not sure if it is worth it for you.

I'd be looking into child rearing forums and websites, etc and checking if the ads are hand picked or generic adsense of some kind.

Also, if you have a hefty list, consider seeking out someone in a related field who has a list for an ad swap.

        2) Should I consider hiring an event promoter or marketer that could help point us in the right direction regarding online advertising? If so, does anyone have any recommendations of reputable event marketing agencies or independent contractors that I should consider hiring?
Again, if you can swing it on Friday, there are typically some good "problem solvers" in there who can likely get you headed in the right direction.

        3) Is there any other marketing opportunity that I haven't mentioned that I should consider?
Hmm, well what if I was a parent who went to your seminar and I wanted to tell all my friends about it? Would I get a commission for it? Do you have or have you considered an affiliate program? Just one thought. The nice side effect of this is of course your affiliates can promote the site for you.

I see you have some articles that have found their way to blogs. There are also some blogging services where you can pay for bloggers to write about your service or event or a specific topic and they will link back to your site.

Also, a video on your site does not appear to be coming from any free sites (like youtube). Have you loaded these videos up to the video sharing sites as well - with links pointing back to your site?

Hope this gives you some possible ideas.

          Hey Mark,

I would go search and contact social organizations directly and pitch your seminars in that direction. Get a sales/marketing person or staff to make online, email, and phone contact with groups and organizations that would fit your target audience. If you hit the "offline" market first, your reputation will build and you can eventually build your online base.

This is one field, that I think going "offline" is going to do you better. I would find a list broker and and rent a list and do a postcard mailing. InfoUSA is a good place to start.

My other business is a special event production/meeting planning company called P2 Events out of Scottsdale, Arizona and I've been telling some of my customers to go that route to expand their customer reach.

One other suggestion is to partner up with a high page rank site that deals with family matters and counseling and do banner advertising or guest author writing on their sites to get the buzz going on your company.

Lastly, I would sprinkle in a good number of "free" webinars on your calendar. You would be surprised at how much more money you will make if you give a free webinar (don't give away the farm!) (you will get more people "attending" a freebie") that gives some surface info on your specialty so they would have to purchase your backend product to get the complete information on how to do what it is you teach....

          Hope that helps,
          Bruce

            Hi Bruce,

Thank you for your recommendations. I reside in Surprise, AZ. What a small world!! Does P2 Events promote webinars as well as onsite events? I guess what I am asking is what can P2 Events offer me in terms of webinar promotions? Thanks.

              Mark,

Yes, small world! Welcome to "monsoon" season! LOL

Unfortunately, I don't promote as many events as I used to. The economy has really done my business in. I just about lost all my major corporate clients to budgetary concerns and they aren't going back to outsource to me until next year.

So I am really going to town with promoting my own business blog/business marketing seminars in Scottsdale now. I am also going to put on my own webinars from July.

My main goal is to build up my email list. I have 300 people in it now since January and will exponentially grow it to 3 times that amount by soliciting referrals from each live and online event I do. The plan is giving away some valuable information through my powerpoint presentations and sell on the backend, either at the end of the presentation or giving a "coupon" code to the attendees if they change their mind and buy from me later.

              Wishin you luck.

Just some "tid-bits" I'm sharing with you now...

          Hi Jill,

Thank you for your recommendations. I have considered responding to entries made on parenting websites but we haven't done that yet. We are already registered on several sites. I think that we will begin this tomorrow. Thanks, again.

Break your sales process to get someone into a webinar into several steps instead of trying to get them enrolled on the first shot.

Work to improve the conversion ratio of each step. Build value at each step.

Get to the top of the ladder one rung at a time.

    Mark,

Maybe you can enlist previous customers, attendees, and speakers if you use them. Have them send out notices to their customers/lists etc.

Also use the search engines to find blogs/ezines that cater to your niche and see if they will mail to their lists, either for a flat fee or for a commission. Creating an affiliate program can boost your attendance by getting other people to market for you.

Finally - are these webinars national in scope or local? If local make sure to engage your local media - they're always looking for material. Socail media is a great underutilized resource for local marketing.

Free is good sometimes - but inexpensive can be good too. E.G. webwire can list a PR for $10 vs the $80+ other sites charge and I've found them to be pretty good at getting the word out.

If you are not building a list of previous or future clients - then sign up with an autoresponder service like aWeber or iContact and start collecting names. Your best customer is going to be someone who just purchased from you. Once they're on your list give them great content before hitting them with an offer for more training, etc.

Finally, there's a friday night chat held every week where anyone can join and ask questions. Its not completely marketing related - we do digress into other topics - but if you have specific questions someone will probably be there that can help answer any questions. see this thread for more info"

    Mark,
The other things you may consider doing are buying banner ad (or Google Content Network image ads) on sites which target your audience. For example. forums which allow banner purchasing or even niche social networks.

You also could give snippets of previous webinars away on YouTube & the other video sites with an enticement to join your list. That way people can get a "preview" of the type of webinar style you are offering. Of course, test out the landing pages to determine what converts the best.

    Hope this helps!

Very good suggestions above. Although I can't find one important one.

Post your event on local classifieds. Whenever I have event at the small scale, I post on my local classifieds with easy to reach contact number and information. Some of the classifieds:

      Toronto Classifieds
      Craigslist Toronto

Also search for "city classifieds" in your area to get better results.

This is in addition to the above replies. Good Luck!
