Moderator Meeting Here and Now! - Yes, I'm talking to You...

Hi Warriors,

All Warriors are Moderators right.

I thought it would be interesting to see how you handle the responsibility.

When you come across a thread that someone violates a forum rule how do
you handle it?

I fortunately haven't come accross anything like that in this forum, but I have in others. And if I do find such a violation, I would report it immediately. On most forums there is a report button, I see there is an infraction button so I guess I would use that, and if the post was really really of concern to me I would try to contact the board admin and moderators on the post.

Use the "report post" button. That brings it to our attention.

I've reported a couple of posts. What I'm not as clear about is the whole infraction thing. When should that be used instead of reporting, and what exactly does it do?

AFAIK, an infraction doesn't involve the moderators, so I'm not sure why I would use it.

I use the report post button.

For anybody who doesn't know what that is, it looks like this:

Because it doesn't involve the moderators.

An infraction is a way of poking someone in the ribs and saying, "Don't do that." It is temporary, and has no power in itself. If someone gets too many from credible people and later draws the attention of the mods, those might be taken into account. But only if they're relevant. Otherwise, they tend to be peer pressure and/or instructional.

Have a look at the main forum right now...scroll through the whole first page....be totally honest!!

How many threads would you report as either mis-categorized, spammy or downright inappropiate?

Me...at the moment I see none that are inappropiate, none that are spammy, but I see at least 4 that are definately mis-categorized & should be moved to the correct forum section...

Would you report these or just lt them go until one of the main Mods move it?

**I know what I would do, or have done already...I want to hear from others...

If it's a newb that appears to have made an honest mistake I sometimes send them a PM and advise them......y'know, things like sig files, making a post in the wrong section, calling Steven a guru...... yadda yadda yadda........

      That's my M.O., also.

I figure if it's worthy of an infraction card, it's worthy of being brought to the attention of the Super Mods.

However, I also understand that some new people are not up on all the rules, so I will sometimes send a "by the way" PM.

Spam gets reported every time, though.

When a member does report a thread or post....does it automatically go to the main mods to remove, or does it automatically disappear after a certain number of reports from the members?

      Ken,
When a member does report a thread or post....does it automatically go to the main mods to remove, or does it automatically disappear after a certain number of reports from the members?
There are a few things involved, but the bulk of the process is what you described:

      1. A single member reports a post, and it's brought to the attention of the mods.

      2. A certain number of members who have certain attributes report it, and it disappears from general view, awaiting action by the mods.

If it's an infraction type post I usually post a nice little "gee you really don't want to do that" kind of reply to them. Most of the time they thank me for the heads up and learn.

If they tell me to shove it, I give them the infraction.

Any spam and I report it and just type "spam" in the text field for the mods.

It depends, sometimes there are ridiculous posts that are obvious spam and from someone with just one or two posts that just joined that day...those I give infraction and report and they are usually gone in minutes so others must do the same!

Anything else I really haven't had issue with yet. So maybe I ignore it? But I've had my blog posts on here reported and deleted and I had wished someone said something to me first...I wasn't understanding that I couldn't talk about niches that weren't money making...err but I was making money with them!! hehe

Anyhow, a lot depends on situation

I only give an infraction to someone with a signature violation, usually. I have had many actually thank me for pointing it out because I always explain briefly and include a link to the rules.

Pretty much anything else, I report. I know the infraction says for rude and insulting posts but I report them instead because I figure the person knows they were rude...lol. But I only do that when it's being quite rude and there isn't any doubt that it was intentional.

Sometimes I report something that I'm not sure about but want a mod's eye on - in fact, I did that earlier today with something that I feel was a backdoor attempt to circumvent a rule. I don't know if the mods would agree or not but at least I pointed it out and made them aware of it.

I think my first use of the infraction flag was last week on a forum spammer.

Then I read the rules and discovered I should have been hitting the report post button because infractions don't really do anything.

So then I just hit the report post button. Eventually enough of us did that so the spammer was sent to the cornfield.

          Outside of spam, I'm pretty much a laissez-faire user-moderator.

The trolls, shills, charlatans, spammers, and scammers invaded the place and took all the pizza while you were sleeping. Real moderators don't sleep.

I got a hell of a deal on a watch, some new nikes, and a fool proof $5,000/day money making system before they made off with the pie though.

For the record, infractions are only sort of temporary.

Temporary in the sense that they stop accumulating after a time and the red or yellow cards eventually disappear from the person's post on the forum.

HOWEVER, there is ALWAYS a record of EVERY infraction you have ever received, even if they have been reversed, even if they were complete BS.

Also, if you give an infraction, the person receiving it will know that you sent it.

Not that those things are a big deal. I just wanted to clarify a few points about infractions as there seems to be some confusion about them.

How much time have you got...

Spammers, scammers, shammers, and a guy whom I'm sure was a terrorist. I could tell that because his sig had a link to a website that only sold button up jeans.

Dan, I Agree. Can't rap my mind around the purpose of the infraction button.

A PM seems to work fine and doesn't embarrass the person. Although
if the person is a prick then an infraction may be the way to handle it?
For me it's a posted thread warning, PM or the Report button.

Now see, I consider an infraction a warning. They don't really do anything unless someone gets a ton of them. Plus, I tried doing the PM thing and got some pretty hostile responses.

I still occasionally get someone miffed over the infraction but most actually thank me. I only give infractions for signature violations, though, and I always say why and post a link to the rules.

        Dennis,

I run to the nearest pub, the spammers never find me there.

as a general rule I report the post and issue an infraction....mainly because most of the ones I catch are spamming or posting inappropriate content and if I issue the infraction it stops them from posting for an hour (I believed anyways, guess I may have been wrong on that count)
