Most of the big ones aren't even "do follow" anymore, so unless you have a buzz-worthy article/website, don't expect those to help much. They're easy backlinks, though.

@randall, I think social bookmarking and social media is over rated. I think sticking to the fundamentals of marketing with SEO, commenting on other blogs, article marketing, participating in forums and groups, etc.,are the way to go. Yes, it takes time but you can't beat the fundamentals, it outlasts all the "fads" out there.

I use social bookmarking to get my websites ranked and Indexed faster. Like Sour said above, most of these sites are "no follow" but you can use social networking sites for other things like I said.

Social Bookmarking sites are supposed to be about sharing your favorite sites with other people and not about ranking on search engines. But by doing proper social bookmarking and growing your network you could get good quality traffic to your site.
It's like what Sour said... most of them are no-follow so not very useful if you want to increase your rank in the search engines.

Most of SB (social bookmarking) can improve:
1. position in google or yahoo
but, they can be detected as duplicate content, so the effect to your original article is:
for a while your post will be down, but post in SB will be higher.
It can be linked to your site perfectly, especially if your post is great.

You have to keep your variety with your back linking methods, Social bookmarking is just another one for me, I have had little to no real value from it unless an article has hit a buzz etc. Other than that, its just easy back links to help index my pages and such.

Hi,
I think social bookmarking also require some effort for you to build, it's just like other social networks sites, such as Facebook, twitter, you need to build relationship with your fans, followers, same as social bookmarking, try not book all your links, try to book some really useful value links, so that people will tend to read which will get your some traffic.

I like the idea of higher rankings from back links. I will take those any day of the week. Now to work on more traffic. I would also include getting back links from government sites if you have great reference material those official sites can use, this is in addition to social bookmarking.

I have been wondering the same thing. So I recently signed up for a bunch of the top ones and I am testing it out on one of my sites.

I know people who swear by it though.

I've been doing very fine without any bookmarking at all, and I've gotten pretty bad results with the bookmarking I've made in the past.

I don't know why but I guess it's time to outsource it because I can't figure out how to get any results from it . . . LOL

Social bookmarking is a method for internet users to share, organize, search, and manage bookmarks of web resources. Unlike file sharing, the resources themselves aren't shared, merely bookmarks that reference them.

As with social media, I think it's a case of really applying yourself and getting conversations going in order to be successful. Gary Vaynerchuk is a good example of someone who used social media and social bookmarking to rock his market and become THE expert on wine tasting. Without that level of commitment, I think it's best as a secondary strategy to more traditional SEO and traffic generation.

The only exception would be if you're creating a piece of marketing with the express intention of it going viral. Dean Hunt made a clever video which went viral. It's called 'Hitler hates Dean Hunt' and you can see it on YouTube. That would be perfect for social bookmarking success, as it's quirky and the type of thing the bookmarking community would dig, or rather, Digg.

Social bookmarking doesn't help much but for indexing your properties quicker. If you want to see some real benefit from it you should participate within the social bookmarking forums to gain followers and join groups.

Eventually your bookmarkings are going to receive some serious traffic once they go viral.
