Watch out if you are using gmail....

Hey warriors, I'm not sure whether this has occurred to you before but one of my gmail accounts got this message "Sorry, your account is disabled..." and they didn't give any reason. Luckily that gmail account is one which receives spam mails and not much important emails is in there.

But it got me thinking and fearing that the main gmail account that I'm using have a chance to get this too and get disabled one day. And that would suck badly because all the important emails and details is in that email.

So are you using gmail too?

I actually am kinda paranoid. So I have a gmail account and a yahoo account. I have all my gmail forwarded to the yahoo account. Although, that probably wouldnt help if the gmail was disabled.

It has happened where I work. For days I thought no one was turning in assignments. So I had to track down what was wrong and discovered our system went down

Hmm must have done something wrong somewhere, somehow
The mysteries continue. Id move all your important emails etc off the GMail account if you are that concerned.

That was what I was wondering too. but the thing is I've not touched the email for a long long time, so how could I done anything wrong?

Unless is a hacker or something.

@shaggard: That's a great idea. Could have backup my google gmail by sending to another mail or something.

That's what you did wrong.. Gmail disables accounts if they're not used regularly.

So does CJ.com (Commission Junction), just fyi.

It's important to log into your accounts unless you want them to be deleted for being dormant.

Yes, I've used Gmail for years now and have never had a problem. - love and will continue to use it.

Gmail does have support - I'm sure you can get an answer to why your account has been disabled.

I have been using a gmail account for sometime now.

You mentioned you haven't used your gmail for a long time. How long? If you weren't able to access it to a certain number of days, they have a right to disable it. Like with hotmail, you must access the account in 270 days or else it may be disabled.

Yes, both Yahoo & Gmail & I think Hotmail, will disable your account if it has been inactive for a while.. not sure how long exactly but I remember hearing it was something like 90 days..

You can activate it again & all your emails should still be there.. just contact Gmail support..

ahhh.. the proverbial "The Big Boys are out to get us and they don't care 'cause they control the world" paranoia argument/concern.

What more people need to understand is that the bigger the company is the more careful they must be; which means more rules and not less.

The problem is that too many don't READ THE RULES and get caught by surprise when they break one by accident but get the full throttle of the reprimand from the company who imposed the rule(s). They then cry foul play; when in actuality, they're the ones in the wrong.

IF these big companies actually treated their customers in the manner in which many complain/worry then these same big companies would not be as big and would not have Shareholders; as they'd be deemed a "BAD INVESTMENT".

Contact support. You'll find out what happened.

The bigger the company, harder it is to reach someone who can actually do something about your situation if anything gets messed up. Most of the time you can only reach a CSR and they always have limited authority. They can only do so much. It applies to big companies in general, not just Google.

Customers are treated poorly at times by big companies, even if not intentionally. Number of customers they deal with, they cannot give everyone the attention they want to. You cannot blame the companies for this, you shouldn't blame the customers either for complaining. If someone is depending on a product or service and it suddenly stops working and the provider cannot be reached, people can feel nervous.

As far as using gmail goes, it is the same as any other free email service. Using a free email address for important email is never safe (I am guilty of that myself). It is like leaving all my valuables in someone's backyard and think they are safe.

      Good reminder.

@tecHead: Well said. The bigger the company, the more rules.

@colio: I didn't use the email to send out emails but it's still receiving mails everyday as I linked it with outlook.

It's just a worrying factor as my main account uses alot of Google stuff like calender, tasks, google docs. so it got disabled for absolutely no reason just because they have a dumb term or rules in it, then it's going to cost alot of trouble and $$.

Hi, I two accounts one is Gmail and Another is Yahoo. My all emails are forwarded to Yahoo from Gmail. I have heard a lot that Gmail disable accounts sometimes. I am sorry, it happened to you. But for safety purpose I would recommend you to go for your private email ID like anything@yourdomain.com

This is a good reminder to check your spare email accounts every 60-90 days or so. Yahoo! does the same thing, btw. I don't know what the exact time limit is, but if you set a calendar reminder to do it periodically, it shouldn't be a problem.

I have several accounts forwarded to my BlackBerry and most I don't use for outgoing, only incoming. Since I never have to log in to read messages in these, I have to remember to make myself manually log in ever so often.

  • Wow, that's pretty lame, and am getting worried because I have Gmail email as well. Thanks for the update. Must be inactivity or too many spam mails, or you reached your email quota that's why your account got disabled?

Funny you mention this.. 2 days my account was closed for 24 hours because of receiving/sending too many emails even though i had no extra activity to my account to my knowledge.

I thought id lost all my emails for the past 4-5 years but then luckily it did start working again!

What sickens me more is that Google now requires a cell phone (not a real phone, mind you) for confirmation in the event of a new or disabled account. Has anyone heard about account limits for phone numbers (as in so-many-Gmail accounts per phone number)? I have yet to get a clear answer on this

If your Gmail account is disabled, does it affect your Adsense and Adwords accounts as well?

That's horrible since my gmail contains a lot of important account information and passwords. I rely on web-based emails since I may not always carry my laptop or be on my computer at home.

Conversely, if your adwords, adsense, or blogger account is banned/disabled, it does not affect your gmail account, right?

hi, thanks for the thread. It's always an eye opener for things we take for granted.
Yet I didn't seem to find the reason till the end given by gmail. Though I quite agree it could be the spam, not logging in (immaterial of the email traffic) or though
    not that likely, email quota.
I would try to get back to support.

One solution that I use, to back up all my Gmail email, is use Mozilla Thunderbird on my local machine and connect it to Gmail with LDAP. Why LDAP? It's seamless, and all I have to do is start Thunderbird. Whatever I delete in Gmail gets deleted, incoming mail is automatically downloaded, I never have to touch it.

I have a copy of everything just in case. To me it's the best of both worlds. I have a local copy of all my stuff, but I still can access the email anywhere in the world or from any internet cafe.

Sounds like a plan -- mind going over more detail of Gmail and LDAP? I've been wanting to do the same.

I mis-spoke it's IMAP not LDAP.... Here is good information on it:

Getting started with IMAP for Gmail - Gmail Help

You have to go into your Gmail Settings: Forwarding and POP/IMAP: and turn on IMAP.

Configuration for different email clients can be found here:

Supported IMAP client list - Gmail Help

The cool thing is when I create or delete a folder or a message in Gmail, it does the same in my client as well.

I've been using Gmail for about five or six years and never had much of a problem--the few times I was not able to access my mail I was able to a short time later. I have two gmail as well as a hotmail account and my comcast and my domain accounts. I don't trust any ONE system so I always copy important emails or documents to several places--this is the essence of disaster recovery.

I did find this on Tech Spikes from Nov. 2008 on why your gmail account could be disabled: Is Your Gmail Account Disabled? | Tech Spikes
