General Advice From One Newbie To Another

I know I am still a newbie in the IM arena. I am still learning LOADS just by coming to this forum. But one thing is bothersome, and I know it has probably been brought up time and time again. If so, I apologize for the redundancy. This thread is really for all the other newbies out there. Hence the thread title. I sincerely hope that this does not get me banned for being so blunt. But......

I have seen a lot of threads and posters asking about "give me free stuff to market", "tell me how to make money today" and "give me a step by step how to make money quickly". These types of posts and questions are already here. Just look through the thread titles. I can tell you right now than within the first TEN pages of the forum there are at least five different FREE methods to start earning money in IM. And they work. How do I know? I have used two of them myself. These are free methods that will only cost you your time. But that is what it boils down too. Time. Effort. Work.

If you will not even take the time to look through the forums and grab these nuggets of information that successful people in the business you say you want to be in are doing, you will not take the time to do anything even if they held you by the hand and said "press this button, copy that and paste it here". The people who will not take the time to search a forum for FREE methods of making money are the same type of people that give IM a bad name. They are also the same type of people that create one hit wonder blogs bashing different programs and methods.

I have been working for myself since July 2009. I am by no means an authority on anything IM, but I am learning. I have worked over the last twelve months at home, and believe me when I tell you this...it is work. From one newbie to another allow me to share what little bit I do know:

1. IM, freelancing, blogging or whatever you choose to go after takes WORK and TIME. Plain and simple. Nothing and I mean nothing is going to happen overnight. Nothing is going to happen if you do nothing. If this is your dream, and you truly want to WORK for yourself and build a business then prepare right now to WORK. The difference is you are building something for YOU and your family. You are not working to fill somebody else's pocket. This is for you.

2. Stop begging for freebies and hand holding. I know that was blunt, but if you need freebies and hand holding you don't want this bad enough. The thought of building a business may appeal to you, but your heart is content just doing the same thing you are doing right now. Save yourself a bunch of frustration and stop chasing a pretty picture. The pretty picture is a reality, but you have got to make it a reality.

3. Ask for advice and act upon the advice. From what I have seen here, this place is full of successful people that have either built their businesses or are in the process of building their business. They have come across the hurdles and mistakes. They have hit the brick walls. They know the pitfalls. Take the advice and use it. Sure, it is probably not going to be the answer you want to hear. But it is most likely going to be the answer you need to hear.

4. Dig into this forum and literally into the minds of successful people. Chances are good that what you are looking for is already here.

Look, one newbie to another, I have been and still am where you are today. The sales pages are flashy and they are enticing. The programs do work for the most part, except all of them are missing one thing that makes the program or service bring results. That ingredient is you. You are the driving force behind your own business. You are the operator that moves that business forward or leaves it in park to allow weeds to grow around it.

We may not have the funds to do all the things we need to do or invest in the tools to make our businesses better. But we can get there, one step at a time. Do what needs to be done to facilitate moving forward. Plan on building your business one virtual brick at a time. Live the life you want to live.

If you really want this...if your really want to build a business....then prepare to work. Even if you do have the funds to purchase different tools, prepare to work. I have seen many people post responses to others about hiring mentors and coaches. While all that may be well and good, be aware that within this forum alone there are plenty of mentors and coaches. They may not be taking you by the hand on an individual basis, but they are laying out road maps.

If you just want to make money overnight, buy a lottery ticket or get in good graces with a rich Uncle. This is not a pipe dream here. This is not playtime in the school sand box. This is the time to build a real business, build your financial security and time to truly live your dreams.

    Ken,

I agree wholeheartedly. There is a huge difference between having your hand held and asking sensible advice from other Warriors.
The bottom line, is that you have to want to do it for yourself. Nobody is going to do it for you.
It will take time, and lots of it. It will also take focus. Like you said, it wont happen overnight.
I wish all newcomers the best of luck, if they are prepared to put the work in, and not sit back and wait for someone to do it for them.

    Great advice Ken

The biggest difference between success and failure for small businesses on or off-line is that some people spend all of their time looking for 'the easy way', and those that are successful are busy actually WORKING!

Anyone that looks for the 'get rich overnight' type products or advice is just setting themselves up to lose money.

It takes time to research the best methods for the way you want to work, time to set up a business and time to develop decent contacts and build a targeted email list.

Are there ways to do it quickly? Yep
Are the results any good if you skip steps to get a quick result? Nope

Essentially it is the same principle for anything in life - you put in the time and effort then you get good outcomes.

Yep, it amazes me how often people don't actually do the work they are supposed to and then they quit, making posts entitled "This stuff is crap!" along the way.

Most people make it more complicated than it is and end up frustrating themselves in the long term. And even worse...giving up.

All it takes to make is a plan of attack, taking massive action on that plan of attack, and consistency and the power to not give up.
