Can't Install Wordpress Plugin

Guys, I am trying to install the "all in one seo" plugin on a clients wordpress site, but it's won't allow me. It the login/password different for the plugins?

I can log into the wordpress site with my username and password, but when I go to install the plugin it also asks me for the Hostaname. How do I find out what the hostname is? I assume where the site is hosted, but I tried that and it didn't work.

I created an account as an administrator but just can't seem to install plugins. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated as I have to do this on a couple sites and don't want to run into this problem each time.

You do use localhost for the hostname if the database is on the same server. It depends on the hosting he has. I assume he has hosting and you are not trying to use wordpress.com right?

Yes, the site is already hosted with something like VODA26.com or something like that.

I'm not sure why it's asking for hosting info. Usually when you install a plugin you

      1. Go into the admin..... servername.com\wp-admin

      2. Go to plugins then Add New

You can then either upload the zip file or find a plugin and click Install Now.

"find a plugin and click Install Now." This is exactly what I am doing, but it is asking for the hostname, login and password.

Mine is different I guess. I never get that prompt.

Do you have Camtasia? Can you make a video or screen shot of what you are doing?

To do the 'find a plugin and click install now', it's asking for the FTP info to access the server to upload the plugin. Better to download the plugin to your HD, then upload it with FTP. Once uploaded, then you can go into admin and activate it.

    Thanks,

    John

So if I get the actual FTP details of the website, Not the wordpress site then I should be able to download the plugin?

OK, I tried to use "localhost" but it says "Username/Password incorrect for ryan"

How can the username and password be incorrect when I just logged into the site with those details.Urgh wordpress is frustrating. Any wordpress experts out there want to lend a helpful hand?

Update- OK I downloaded the plugin to my computer. Then attempted to upload it from my PC into wordpress, but then it asks for the login info which of course it keeps saying is wrong. I am hoping once I get the FTP details for the main website that it will actually let me upload the plugin.

You have to be able to FTP into the server to upload the plugin. That will require the username and password. Once you upload it, then in admin, you go to 'plugins' (should show that there is a new one there) and activate it.

    Thanks,

    John

Weird that its asking for the hostname, have you tried just entering to IP address of the server into the field?

I am waiting on the FTP details from the site owner on the first website and hopefully that will allow me to install the plugin.

OK, so I am working on two wordpress sites currently. The second one I was able to install the plugin no problem. The only issue I am having is that I can't change the title tags on the home page. For some reason it will not change the title tags on the home page(I can do it on all other pages). So weird how I am having issues with getting the title tags changes only on the home page and no others.

Hey Rocketguy, that is just that your client has set file permissions that don't allow to write/modify files.

I don't recommend you changing their file permissions in order to make it easier for you to update the plugins. Leave it as it is and just add the data is asking for.
The data is the same as you use on the FTP.
    hostname= domainname.com or ip address (173.0.100.111).
Username= the FTP username you have.
Password= The FTP password you have.
These are the FTP info and not the Wordpress access info.
