Someone remind me: The email you send to pirates ripping off your products?

We've all been victims of this, and there's lots of threads about this issue.

Let's face it, part of our business now requires chasing people who are blatantly ripping off our products and selling them on Rapid Share etc.

I've just found 3 scumbags doing this with one of my products.

Paul Myers once provided a template to approach them to get them shut down. If you're reading Paul, please could you repost that procedure you've previously recommended?

Or if anyone else has a good procedure (a sensible, reasonable one that gets results and acts within the law) then please do share if you can.

Kind regards,

Nick

  • Pirates just don't care. I've sent all type of legal-looking emails and they won't even blink. I've contacted their hosting and domain registration companies, and they said that I've got to send all type of ownership proof that I'm the legal copyright owner, blah blah blah... just not worth the time.

It doesn't matter whether pirates care or not. Every DMCA I've ever filed for my stuff has resulted in the loss of the pirates hosting within 48 hours or the take down of my stuff. That's all that really matters.

Pirates are scum. I have no compassion for them at all. I don't care if they think they're down on their luck losers in life. They're leaches with a sense of entitlement. They think it's their right to glide through life and profit from other people's sweat and hard work.

Yup - I agree with every word Suzanne says. I've had to do it twice, and both time action was taken within hours.

Both times I started by emailing the address given on the whois details. Surprise - neither replied till I got heavy via their webhosts.

The first one replied immediately their site was taken down (!) and the second replied when their host forwarded them a DMCA notice.

    Pirates are scum.

I actually feel sorry for at least one of them. I found a fella selling a dvd download of mine for $10, he was selling TONS of stuff, not just mine.

Under an assumed name, I sent him an email as his site requested, asking for how to pay for "my product", and how to download it, he sent me instructions. I then identified myself to him and we started an email discussion.

He actually felt it was okay to sell "the big guys" stuff, because for the past 3 years he was down on his luck, and it was the only way he could pay his bills. I told him that I would help him develop and sell his own stuff, and guess what, he wasn't interested.

No surprise, but.... really sad. To be that down on yourself, to only think you can make money selling stuff you stole.

BTW, part of his justification was that "most of the big guys" are on the pirate sites too, swapping stuff, taking stuff.

Just some thoughts, need more coffee.

PS: I don't condone what he does at all, but I have compassion for him, just wanted to be clear on that. A man who is obviously intelligent, to be that stupid about "life" and even karma. He didn't get that producing something would produce a change in his life.

      But mostly?

      Spying on the pirates.

If you think these people are on pirate sites to get away without paying for the latest $17 WSO, perhaps you'd like to buy a bridge.

And to think, if they didn't have it available for download, I might have sold more copies. Why, that makes me so mad, I'm going to just not sell my next product! That will show them! Rob me of a few sales, will you? Well, I'll just not make any money on this next product. How do you like THAT? Huh? Don't you feel like a fool now that I'm not making any money?

          Hey... wait a minute

Well, seeing as how he is a thief and all, I doubt he made that story up or anything because he got caught. I'm sure everything he said was the God's honest truth, lol.

Folks on here told him how good "his" product was.

    Nice.

Now I have heard everything... selling your products on rapidshare?

    hehe...that was funny.

I have to remember that an upload site is now selling stuff. That is a good one.

I could understand the games or videos... but just products uploaded onto rapidshare is not being sold unless the person that uploaded it, is selling it via a membership site and providing the link to the members to download it. Rapidshare does not sell your products...unless there is a site called "Rapid Share" that sells things? o.O
