help! just updated wordpress and installed 3.0 and now its not working!

I'm in desperate need of help.... I just did the automatic upgrade to wordpress 3.0 and now my whole site is down. This is the error:

Fatal error: Cannot redeclare class wp_locale in /hsphere/local/home/lastingp/eagleliteraryfoundation.org/wp-includes/locale.php on line 14

I didn't back up my files. Is there a way I can fix this??

How old is your site? If it's been up for a couple weeks you can ask your host to restore your site to what it was a week ago.

I would think all your files are still there on the server and it can be fixed but I would also suggest to anyone upgrading to WP 3.0 to backup your blog first.

I've had issues with about 6 of my sites not installing and a few of them did upgrade just fine. The sites that didn't upgrade didn't go down though, the installation just failed due to lack of memory. I have included below what support did to fix my memory issues (they didn't give me Ginko Biloba, .... ok bad joke.. many late nights and no sleep. lol)

here is what support told me about what I have to do on all my others and how they fixed this issue. I'm posting this so anyone out there can be aware of the issues that are being faced so you know in advance.

I asked why I was running out of memory on my installs and the installs failing. here is the response
      -----------------------------
"From what we have seen this appears to be due to the latest updates in Wordpress that require it to use much more memory than it had previously used. Since it wants to use more memory than is allowed by our generous default PHP settings, the only way around that is to use a custom php.ini file to raise the limits at the account level. We have been seeing a number of reports with this issue since the latest Wordpress updates. Let us know if you need any further assistance."

The problem is that a custom php.ini needs to be created for your account, and then the memory_limit configuration needs to be adjusted, I've also added the following directive in the .htaccess file to have the php.ini apply to your entire site.

The settings will be the same between accounts, so it should be possible to download the php.ini in the public_html/, and then re-upload the same php.ini to the other accounts and adding the following line the .htaccess file - making sure to change the path for each account.

      root@grooms [/home/interval/public_html]# cat .htaccess
      suPHP_ConfigPath /home/interval/public_html
      ----------------------------------

and now I have 15 other blogs to do that on. oh fun

I upgraded to 3.0 yesterday, now I can't reply to comments from my dashboard, I have to go to my blog home page and reply from there.

Wordpress upgrade was successful? I mean you got that error at what stage?
Now I see EVENTs plugin has problems... Make sure you have it installed...or
remove this widget/code from sidebar until you get compatible Events plugin .

Through ftp go in and rename your plugin folder to something like plugins1. Wait a few then go check your site. You should see the basic framework of your site without the bells and whistles.

Go back through your ftp and rename the plugin folder back to it's original name(plugins). The reason your doing this is that wp will automatically disable all your plugins. You will then be able to access the wp-admin panel.

Reactivate each plugin seperately and check the site and functionality before you reactivate another plugin.

Most likely you have a plugin that is causing the problem and not wp3.0

Let me know if that works for you.

P.S. for everybody else thinking of updating...disable your plugins first then reactive them.

  • ya! it was the events plugin i had installed... so now my whole calendar is gone

is there a way to change the version back to the one i had before (i believe 2.9 or 2.8) or is it not safe to keep using the old versions?

Well it is not good idea to go back to old version....
Checkout out plugin author's site maybe they have updated version which is compatible
with Wordpress 3.0.... Also checkout plugins section...if they do not update ...someone
else will take that plugin..make it wp3.0 compatible and will launch as New plugin...so maybe you switch to that...

You may have to wait few days to get this happen....
      Wish you best,
      Mohsin
