Social Bookmarking - a Newbie Question

I have done very little social bookmarking, but am ready get serious with this now.

My newbie questions is this: Do you bookmark a site more than once? Or do you only bookmark it again when you make a change, like when you ping something? Or do you never bookmark it again?

Also:

I have seen both Onlywire and Social Marker discussed favorably.

Is there any real difference between them, other than that OnlyWire is not free and Social Marker is?

Haven't been bookmarking for a long time...

I bookmark only once. And to be honest I was doing it manually and still would (now I outsource actually), I simply put a bookmark folder with 10 another folders inside it, each having 5-10 links, and then I would simply open all links in the first folder in tabs, then the second one and so on. Although it's not the fastest, it's kinda a "no-brainer"

I like to bookmark with stumbleupon. I use multiple accounts and bookmark my sites once with each account.

My battle testing is showing that, for some, not all, social bookmarking sites it's better if someone OTHER THAN YOU bookmarks your offerings.

The impression given is that people "stumbled upon" your site, liked it so much they bookmarked it.

Bookmarking your own stuff can appear like you're attempting to "stack the deck" in your favor.. shameless self promotion

So.. I try to get both, if I meet someone and they want something from me... I ask em to gimme a little boost, reciprocal quid pro quo

similarly if I come across someone in social media who I feel I might be able to work something out with in terms of reciprocal publicity, I''ll scour their offerings to see if there's something I could do to boost their stuff before I ask them to do something for me.
Chances are the other guy is pitching something that it isn't gonna hurt you to help them pitch. Look to see if they are pitching a local charity, there's no way that charity could compete against what ever you're pitching.

Okay, David, so how do submission services like Onlywire fit into your approach?

      Or don't they?

I don't use them, I get pretty good results from social bookmarking by hand, semi automated with the addthis tool bar, and sometimes socialmarker.com

I pitch every other blog post to a dozen do follow, then wait a couple days, then "fill in the blanks" so to speak with some no follow ones.

every dozen or so I'll edit or embellish the title and or caption

There are always a dozen or so people who want to learn from me, I'll throw em a bone and request that they yahoo buzz something or mixx something
        works pretty good for me

Bookmark any individual page only once - some bookmarking sites may support updating what the URL is about, but bookmarking is a scattershot marketing tactic anyway and not worth over-thinking, in my opinion. Just bookmark any relevant pages once and move on. You might start by bookmarking top level domains, that's what I do, but then I usually bookmark many other pages on the site, such as blog posts. I don't bookmark "contact me" and "privacy" pages, but if the page has content somebody might want to look at I try to remember to bookmark it.

My opinion is Onlywire sucks. The OnlyWire button caused disastrous (5 second) load-time delays on every site I had it on recently so I removed it. It did not suck in the past. I used to recommend it. The other problem is OW wants to bully users into using FireFox.

In addition, any online bookmarking service will require you to login and "confirm" numerous bookmarks. So while you can "bookmark" easily, you have to go back and do this maintenance which I find quite tedious.

I bookmark now with a desktop software that does the bookmarking and "Captcha" (confirmation) at the same time.
