Best Centralized Wordpress Management Tool.

I'm starting to realize more and more I need centralized wordpress
functionality.

Is Wordpress MU, the best way forward, I need ideally to be able
to login in to one central location and upload plugins on dozens
of blogs, ideally update wordpress itself, add content and so on.

I understand firepow is a decent piece of s/w but rarely here
much discussion on it and his blog hasn't been updated since
april 2009.

Anybody with some solid experience in this area?

You probably want to ask this question again in a couple of weeks time when everyone has had a chance to digest the implications of the Wordpress 3.0 release.

One of the major features of WP3.0 is merging in WPMU so they are no longer separate pieces of software. The result is that you should be able to manage 1 or 1 million blogs (as long as they are on the same host) from a single control panel.

Not many people are up to speed on it yet, seeing as it's only a few days old. Once there's more widely circulated information you'll probably get some better answers.

    Cheers,

    Andy

Give us some time to break down WP 3.0 and we'll tell you.

It's currently doing the rounds. Hackers will show WP the holes, developers will show WP the bugs.. and then we move forward.

Until that point, it's all up in the air a little bit.

My dev has it up on a test blog now , he says he won't put it near our
sites right now, last week I asked him ETA and he said things were a good
couple of months away, I wasn't really thinking about it for centralized
blog administration , just for upgrading the sites, but if it kills both birds...

        We're exactly the same here.

We are running 3 test blogs, mixing stuff between them

Many people have been finding bugs with the plugins, but we have more of an issue with the WPMU integration... which is what you are looking at.

Moving slowly, but it is on our to-do list.

Read this post, Simon. She is using WPMU herself for her project, with succes, it seems.
Perhaps you can PM her to ask for more details on that. I just downloaded WPMU yesterday and will spend some days digging it.

Jayx is right...when it comes to Wordpress it is best just to hold off for a bit after every release. By the time they move on to the next release I am using the one before without any problems! Well..major problems... :-)

Have a look at buddypress as this is what I think Wordpress will be or is using at is their MU program.

It is their sister program after all.

I am looking for the same answers. Lots of blogs, most at the same host, and whenever I have a brainwave I want to update all of them with the same new plugin, which I have to do one by one.

Another common scenario is that I want to update my GoCodes redirects on all sites to add a new marketing link. I have to go into every installation separately and update. Takes a while, and I only have 10 or so blogs. When I'm a big player, and updating my sites from my yacht off the Cote d'Azur I dont want all that hassle.

    Is Wordpress MU the answer?

I always thought Wordpress MU was something you install on one domain and then allows you to create numerous blogs on that one domain. Have things changed since then? Otherwise no, Wordpress MU wouldn't be the answer to your problems.

Out of the box... WPMU only exists on one site..

But with the multi site option in 3.0 and a little playing, you can run blogs on more than one site, from the single installation.

            Yes.

There is a domain mapping plugin going around tech circles right now... and some tutorials have been knocked up, too

When on the Yacht, the project manager and the outsource team is the answer, no matter what tool you use...

I was just about to post what WillR has just posted.

I thought it was for multi-user blogs on the same domain. Now, if you've got a bunch of WP installations on... what are they called??? Um, basically sub-domains (I can't remember the right term that hosting companies use just now...) then I suppose that might work because technically they're all on the same domain.

However, if you've got a reseller hosting account and you've got each domain set up with its own cPanel, then I would think WPMU isn't going to work across those domains.

But I'm not much of a WP dude so... have I got that completely wrong?

I need a solution like that for following reasons:
      1. centralised plugin updates
      2. centralised change of passwords as outsourcer/employee leaving

I don't need installation as I use WP Twin clones, real handy

      Any recommendation there?
