I personally don't mess with anything less 2,500 a month on exact match. I tried a few 1,000 a month sites and had horrible traffic and it took literally a year for the site to pay off the domain that it cost me.

1,000 searches a month/ 30 days= 33 visitors a day. Also there are 10 slots on the search. Out of that 30 let's assume all the 10 spots have a 10% click through. That would add up to 3 visitors a day for you. Now I know this some very basic math and there are variables such as people click on multiple search results but I think you get my drift here.

It totally depends how micro you want your niche to be and what kind of competition your facing and also what kind of products you can sell in that niche.

For instance a niche selling a high end electronics product will need a lot less searches than one selling toothpaste

I use 1000 exact match as a minimum, and I do build a lot of blogs, so if they only make 10 bucks a month I'm happy but the majority make a lot more.

If you are planning to build just a few sites then you will probably need to up that a bit and be more picky

For me the key has always been to build as big a portfolio as possible and over the last couple of years this has been very fruitful
