I am trying to help people and make money at same time. Am I being unrisonable?

So I had a problem with pr0n addiction a few years back, and decided to start a website that would help people with same problem, if I ever get better. I wanted to keep this site free, and make money from affiliate sells (mostly from amazon) and advertising.

The challenge that I ran into now, is that when I am being honest and give out info, most of my traffic doesn't convert. But if I try to add sales, or push some products hard, I feel bad because I feel like I am not helping people as honestly as I wanted.

But then writing up all this stuff takes a lot of my time, and I feel that I should be compensated for it. So I go back to trying to sell stuff...

As you can tell I am a bit confused. I wonder if anybody else had similar struggles?

I don't think that's a problem. There's nothing wrong with adding content to help you earn money from your hard work.

This happens quite often in Sales, if you believe in what you are selling then where is the issue? It would be a different story if you were promoting one thing and then delivering something completely different. Just my 2 cents

You're making money in a much more honest way than many on the Internet, feel proud about it, not ashamed.

Don't think of it as trying to "sell" people stuff. Think of it as helping them overcome their addiction. If the product you are promoting really helps, then I'm sure they will thank you for it!

I think the fact that you are contemplating this issue should prove to yourself that you will end up being very successful...

Go for it. It seems to me that you are trying to help out and you're just making a living out of it. There's nothing wrong with that. It's win-win for both of you actually.

If you are not making enough money, you are not helping enough people.

Yes, you deserve to be compensated for your efforts. And if you are truly helping people, they will have absolutely no problem compensating you for them. If the products you offer them really do help, and the info you give them really is good, you'll build a level of trust that will ultimately outperform any "trick" you might otherwise try.

It's harder at first, because trust takes time to build. But there is nothing wrong with being compensated, and there is nothing wrong with wanting to help. Don't be afraid to ask for the compensation, and at the same time, don't be afraid to help. You'll find the right balance.

There's nothing wrong with making money and helping others at the same time. Besides, isn't this what others are doing?

I'd go along with my pre-posters and would rather see amazon links as a further addition as I asume the products you are advertising are basic relevant to your websites topic.
Those links also offer a surplus value as you're recommending those. Getting a share of sale is just fringe benefits.
No one is able to provide help for free on the long term. Public trusts are funded by donations too and wouldn't be able to provide further services without. So I see nothing that speaks against the fact that you're trying to get compensated for your work.

Actually it's one of the best strategies of "effective" marketers online -- to help people and at the same time turn them as buyers to eventually earn income. That's never unethical, and remember, the more value you put into yourself, that means you're just not like the others. And believe it or not, even if you sell them big amounts, I'm sure there will be people willing to pay for it because they know the knowledge you'll give them is worth their big pockets.
