Amazing Free Membership Plugin

In research our new product I was looking for a great membership plugin for wordpress.

I looked at them all and while many provided some great features I think this one out matched them all.

It provides security, dripping of content and much more.

Have a look and tell me what you think. Also interested to hear from anyone using and your experiences.

I had just started playing around with this one a few days ago and it's pretty amazing that it's free given all that it does.

From what I've seen so far, it seems every bit as powerful as Wishlist and it may be no coincidence that Wishlist is coming out with an update with more features the in the next few days/weeks.

One of my clients uses it and swears it is the best he has used. I will use it in the future for sure.

It doesn't have Clickbank integration or a lot of the huge management features like DAP has.

But it's definitely good for lighter use.

I've used it for my Wordpress Coaching blog and it really is easy to use. It doesn't have all the features that the paid plugins have, but it's easy to set up and for what I needed it, it gave adequate results. I was ready to spend over $100 for a membership plugin when I found this one and I have to say, I didn't look back once I set it up.

I've been playing around with a lot of membership stuff, and s2Member is definitely impressive... but I've been sidetracked by playing with Robert Puddy's Login Frequency Marketing this weekend. I might get around to trying out s2Member later this week.

This plugin provides a lot of value for a free plugin. It supports 5 levels of membership, Pay Per Post, user name/link sharing protection, optional download limit, a couple of affiliate systems, a couple of email systems, potentially other systems through custom scripting... The features are all well documented.

If you're not a techie, all the features are easy to configure, except for the content dripping. Unfortunately, this feature is implemented in PHP, in the pages and posts themselves, while post and page restrictions are implemented at a centralized level, in the s2member General Options. So access to a post or page is determined in 2 passes. The first pass is handled by the framework itself. Does the user have access to the post or page at all? In other words, does he have a membership at the appropriate level and is he logged in? No? He is presented with the Membership Options page. Yes? He is presented with the post or page itself. And that's where your PHP content dripping code, if any, executes. You have to handle the case where you are going to show the content but also the case where you're not. Else your member may never know that this post or page contains additional content but that he doesn't have access to it yet. Ideally, this should be handled by the framework, 1] for consistency, 2] for ease of use and 3] to eliminate the risk of PHP errors.

If you're a techie, this is a great plugin. The code is well documented, with many hooks/filters and lots of API constants. You can alter existing functionality or introduce new functionality without modifying the original code.

    I hope this helps.

It would be great if someone would make a few videos on the more complicated issues like dripping etc.

I haven't had the time to set up the dripping feature but it looks pretty straight forward.

If you visit their forum and search for 'content dripping' there's a thread called 'Content dripping using wrong algorithm' that lays it out. They have the code there that goes on the member's page and you can use a Wordpress plugin called Exec-PHP to edit it.

The one caution is that you need to disable the wordpress 'WSYWYG editor' because it breaks the php code if left on.

I just love s2 member - I found it a few months back and will be using it on my next offline niche site. It'll do everything I need and more. I'm looking for multiple levels of access and it'll handle that just fine.

They will do the installation too, which includes creating the signup page and another one too I think.
