I can only speak for the UK, as consumer protection laws vary from country to country. In the UK you should ALWAYS use a Credit, not debit, card for online purchases.

If you do you are 100% protected by law, whether its non-delivery, fraud, substandard goods etc. Your credit card will refund you as soon as you complain. They have to. Debit cards are different and the banks have no similar obligation.

Lucky us! Other countries will be different so I can’t comment on those.

There's a risk anytime you sent information over the Internet, anyone that tells you otherwise are delusional. However, credit cards tend to minimize your liability. If you have no choice but use a debit card then constantly monitor your account to make sure that you dont see any suspicious payments, because with this way if your information gets stolen you will be able to report it efficiently and not be stuck with a bill.

Much safer using a credit card.

Debit cards give access to your whole bank account.
Even if you catch it and the bank gives you your money back. It is gone until then which might be awhile. An empty bank account would be painful.

Oddly enough, or maybe not, I like using my Paypal debit card because it is one step removed from my actual bank account. I can control my maximum loss by how I fund it, and there are still protections.

It is easy to obtain once you have a Paypal account.

I personally have felt completely safe using my credit/debit cards online. I've never ever had a situation arise where my account was compromised. I also have 24 access to my bank and credit accounts, so even if something did happen I would know about it very quickly.

Are you asking about Visa, specifically, or debit cards in general?

You could get a PayPal debit card (top up card) which can be used wherever Visa is accepted. That way, you'll only be liable for the amount you've loaded onto the card.

If you just load on enough funds each time to cover a specific purchase, it's a lot safer than a standard bank debit card.

Since I do not have a credit card, I have no option but to use a debit card.

Even though the recommended way to buy stuff online is through a credit card, there are those of use that live credit free - except for a house note. I see no reason to change my way of life, just to buy something online.

I choose not to have a credit card because of the finical burden that can follow. By using plastic money its too easy to live above your means - until the bills come due with 21% interest.

Live credit free and use a debit card.

I have to agree that without a credit card you're credit free but you could put it to good use sometimes. However when purchasing online, credit cards are safer to use since they are also monitored by banks. It'll be easier to make adjustments if need be.

I don't have a credit card and only use my Visa debit card (new zealand) - but even when I was in the UK I only ever used my Visa debit card not a credit card - CC is too easy to overspend, debit has a lower limit - that which is in my account!

However, I have a separate account which I use for the internet - it doesn't come out of my every day account. Hope that helps.

    Cheers, Lalla

This is not 100% true. You have protection for UK purchases where the cash price of the goods or services is more than £100 and not more than £30,000. And it can be very difficult to obtain payment.

Must admit to hearing my grandmother's voice when reading the OP.

I've always used a visa debit card online. Until a couple of weeks ago I didn't have a credit card. Now that I have, I probably won't use it.

I've been using a visa debit card for online buys for over 15 years no problem. I wouldn't use it for overseas purchases though, because they have systems and laws different than the U.S. For overseas purchases Paypal's the way to go.

    Hey harro1

Again speaking for the UK it is much better to use your credit card. Automatic insurance on various types of fraud commited on your account.

But in saying that it will all depend on your bank. I use my debit card for online purchases.

Fraud was ATTEMPTED on my debit card but my bank, who have a team who keep a close eye on all transactions, managed to stop the transaction going through. They called me, asked a lot of security questions, and then told me that my card had been stopped so that any further attempts couldn't happen.

Only thing was is that I was due to go on holiday in the next 3 days and had no other way to access my money. (...Bummer...)

All worked out in the end though and was thankful that they stopped the card.

Just stick with your credit card.

Reach new heights and good luck,

    Nathan

I use both my credit card and debit card for online purchases. Just really depends on where I am purchasing from. If its not a store I know I always use credit it. If I am purchasing from somewhere like Amazon I have no problem using debit.

Since all you have right now is a debit card, go ahead and use it but you will be much safer if you get a credit card, particularly if its accessible in your environment.

I always say it's better to use a credit card vs a debit card for online purchases because if something goes wrong I rather have a high credit card bill that I can fight rather than no money in my bank account.
