Do you use "common" e-mail marketing strategies or techniques?

I read an interesting article the other day about e-mail marketing and it talked a lot about specific techniques and strategies e-mail marketers use (targeting, segmentation, dynamic content etc) and it triggered some thoughts in my mind about how many internet marketers tend to just build a list, send out one blanket e-mail to everyone and then rinse/repeat.

Why don't more internet marketers try and utilize some of the strategies you see larger companies (not all, but some) use when it comes to using e-mail as a marketing tool? Do you use them? If no, why not?
