Can I change my domain name without losing back links?

I have a blog that I use consistently now. I want to change my domain name of shane-boyd...com to the keyword for my site.

I own the domain name I want. I can forward shane-boyd.com to my other domain.

My question is, will I lose back links by doing that?

Thanks,

Shane

If you own the domain, you can go to google webmaster tools and create a redirect from your old domain to your new one and you won't lose any backlinks.

I am not sure about what the redirect is but I think it's 301

Yeah ... just do a 301 redirect to the new site from the old domain

Do a 301 redirect and it will tell the search engines that the site has moved forever to the new location.

But, when you take the 301 redirect down, your going to lose those backlinks. Lets say that a year from now you let that old domain expire, or remove the hosting account and the 301 is removed,,, then your redirect is also removed.

From the time you put up the 301, see if you can get the majority of those old links edited and pointed to the new site.
