How much networking and recruiting needed for success in affiliate marketing?

Too often we fall trap to the consumer-marketer niche and dismiss the reality of what it really takes to make lot of money on the internet.

This "what it really takes" has a lot of ambiguity in it.

I spent hours listening to these iTunesU podcasts of entrepreneurship lectures from Stanford and Yale. They're CEO of huge companies with venture capital.. so maybe an exception.. but it was clear the one and only common denominator among all founders was their ability to network, recruit, and build relationships with the right people.

My question is how much of that necessity to recruit and build relationships transfers over to success in internet marketing?

Could that affiliate marketer "quietly" making $50,000/month really be jetting around the world actively recruiting C-level talent from fortune 500 companies to successfully build his affiliate business.

Could Eban Pegan really just be the celebrity 'face' of a much larger company with a bunch of marketing PhD's, executives, and behind the scenes CEO working together to dominate the consumer-marketer niche?

Ok, not to get too crazy there. But is it safe to assume your success in any internet marketing business model is directly proportional to the ability to connect with other people (and not talking list-building here)... but real personal relationships? It has been mentioned every so often about the importance of connecting with website owners, making IM friends, and IM local meet-up groups are popular. So perhaps I'm just verbalizing the obvious..?? I began my IM career still in college so I could really use input of seasoned Warriors.
