First offline contract

I nailed down my first offline contract today. I had to go a little cheaper than I would like but this client will be worth it I think. They sell computer services already and have a large client list. However they have never really had the web dept to do design and SEO. This has the potential to lead to partnering with them in that arena after I show what I can do. And it puts that first one in my portfolio so I'll have something to show my next potential client. The money ain't horrible btw it just ain't the windfall some talk about. However with a little time and provable results I should be right up there soon enough. And I got my first client within 4 weeks of really pushing it. BTW I have no website currently, no business cards, no fancy brochures.

I know people will pop in and ask "so how did you do it" so I'll tell you up front there is no secret. After being unemployed for longer than I could stand and hearing things like we aren't taking apps from long term unemployed I decided to hire myself. I was starting from scratch and wondering where was my list? Then I realized I had one. I have worked in technology with a lot of SMB people over the years in various industries. I feel I have a good rep for doing what I say I'll do amongst those people. So I started looking at their websites. I went after the one that needed the most help first. I talked to him about what he needed to help his business. I laid out a comprehensive proposal outlining how I could answer those needs. And today he approved it.

Now starts the delivery portion of our program. And I intend to be all over that. I have done my research. I feel ready to compete. I know what this clients tastes are and I think I can deliver a website he'll like. And as important of course one that will be a solid foundation for all our marketing efforts going forward both online and off.

I am almost giddy.

Way to go! I just love hearing about someone taking the step into the offline world. There is so much potential out there.

All it takes is the first step... as Andrew Cavanagh says... Just go talk to people!

Believe me it gets easier to ask the amounts you deserve. My first offline client was $500 if I remember rightly - and I was nervous asking for "that much". Now when I'm asked the price starts at $5000 and I've learned to quote that without blinking. If you've proven your value and expertise the rest is easy peasy.

So well done - don't forget to ask them for referrals (most people forget this step)

Awesome! My offline business is still growing. It's all I do for now, but I am moving into other arenas as well. I am in the process of testing the waters of another offline market that looks to be very promising.

Best of luck to you and your new venture!

First off all "Congratulations" and secondly...

Explain to me WHY you're not actually giddy with excitement?

You've accomplished more than most who have been 'kicking around' with the idea of being in control of their destiny via becoming a marketing and consulting professional (i.e. Offline Marketer).

You nailed it on the head with your statement that there really are no secrets.

There are things we may not know, irrespective of our level of experience, however, when you take action on your desires, amazing things happen. The biggest secret is in knowing that action is the key ingredient for initial success.

OK, I'm gong to sit down now because I'm giddy with excitement on your behalf

So many people get right up to the point of execution but never pull the trigger.

Congratulations on getting out there and picking up your first client!

Work a bit on positioning and you'll find it easier to charge what you're worth.

Thanks everyone for your support and tips.

NewbiesDiary - Yeah I was sweating my quote price a bit even though I know it's low for this work. But I went with it and it didn't even enter into the final discussions. Probably left something on the table but that's fine lots of potential here. And I will defintely be working the referrals. Also I will be incentivizing this so his outside salesmen will want to sell my services.

Bayo - As it has sunk in I have officially crossed into giddy. I guess the reason I wasn't to start with is it's been real hard out here for the last few months and i think I half-expected to get the phone call saying forget it after all. Instead I got emails full of the info I need to get this done. Now it feels official and giddiness is on.

Congratz!!! Not to hijack the thread, but I signed my first offline client last week. I know how you feel. I thought it was all going to fall through, and then the guy signed the contract. Once I got in my car, I had to scream because of the adrenaline rush and the sheer joy that it actually worked!

I thought to myself "wow, I could actually own my own business...", and then it hit me: I DO OWN MY OWN BUSINESS!

Congratz again, may your next customer come soon!

Well congratulations to you as well and best wishes.

Luckily I was working from the house today so I could be silly in private and I was.

Hi well done as Stef said Andrew Cavanagh says you just have to get off your ass and talk to people without selling, just talk about them and how you can help them.
    Just repeat the process
    Cheers

    Great work.

Just remember that when you get a few more you will need to juggle your time a bit so with this one set up your systems and don't do to much more than you quoted on.

Also make sure you put some good time constraints on what you do.

A few years ago when I got my first major contract we did so much more and did it in double fast time.

Unfortunately this customer who is still with us expects the same service even though we may have quite few projects all running at once.

I learnt a valuable lesson. Use this one to layout your processes so you can do a lot more. Document as much as you can both from your side and the customers and then you will have a great resource to offer others.

    Any how enjoy your time.

    Congratulations! That's awesome.

I have picked up some offline clients purely by accident. Just having conversations with them and finding out that they needed help with their online presence. I wasn't really looking to add that business model to my bag of tricks but when it falls in your lap and you like the people it's fun to help them.

One of my clients is the salon where I get my hair cut. It's fun to trade services too. I can get everything from a hair cut, facial, tanning, nails, etc. in exchange for having fun making videos and creating their online presence with web 2.0, etc.

    Fun stuff.

Good luck to you and wishes for many more clients!

    Cheers.

I got a my annual bee prevention spray done for free this year for some work that I did for my exterminator. Also got some free polo's and t-shirts with my company name on them for doing work on my buddies website for his t-shirt business.

While I'd rather have cash, bartering is fun as well. As long as it only takes me an hour or so to complete the work, I think it is a win win for both parties.

    Nice tip.

Most people know a whole lot more people than they realize especially when you start thinking about who the people you know might also know.

Apart from following through and delivering on this project one of the best things you can do now is talk to some other prospects while your confidence is up.

    Kindest regards,
    Andrew Cavanagh

So now that you started with a loss leader, what's your plans for backend selling to make additional profits from that initial sale?

Things such as a lead generation report, email follow-up series for prospects, etc. etc.

That's one way to earn additional revenue even if you take a hit with the initial agreement price =)
