A Key Principle in Finding Products that WILL Sell Online

I’ve been thinking A LOT lately….and I mean A lot.

So much so that my brain kinda hurts a little, and its getting to the point where I have so many different ideas, projects, thought patterns, desires, dreams, and so on that I end up confusing the heck out of myself.

Anyways, that is besides the point. What I wanted to talk about today was how I noticed that a lot of internet marketers, and those looking to make money online, seem to have neglected a part of the power of the internet and the basis by which all of this got started.

I am really going to do my best to avoid blanket statements here, but this is a point I thought would be very worthwhile to discuss.

Lately, I have been receiving a lot of feedback for a number of products that I work on, and have watched a lot of people flood into new markets, launch new sites, start new campaigns, and so on.
The problem is that I think many of us are guilty of forgetting the secret weapon that the internet allows us to utilize:

Anonymity.

No, I don’t mean this in the way that you can create a fake person online, or sell crappy products without anyone knowing who you are…

I mean this in the sense that the internet is a place where people can anonymously search for solutions to their problems, and deal with issues that they are not comfortable talking about or asking questions about in a face to face situation.

I have actually had people ask me why adult products do so well online, and the answer is quite simple:

Because buyers can be secretive, find a solution to their problem, and grab the product they need without telling a soul if they don’t want to.

This is the reason that weight loss pills, acne systems, sexual health products, and all sorts of stuff that falls within those categories work so well online.

Now, obviously there are many marketers out there who have made a living selling products that can be found in stores, generic brand names, amazon products, etc etc…but I would like to point out that we should all keep the power of anonymity in the back of our mind at all times.
Think about this.

A lot of people think they can make big money online, and that the entire process is easy.
All they think they have to do is find a product they like, and one that people use, then make a website and market it.

“Well everyone uses shampoo and bars of soap each day in the shower….so there is obviously a huge market and I must be able to make a killing selling soap bars online”

Therein lies the problem.

If you are going to market and try to sell something that is available in every corner store offline, you are going to have to work that much harder and really come up with a USP.

This post is getting longer than I expected, so I am going to cut it down.

The point is that the internet gives consumers the ability to deal with their embarrassing issues in a much more private manner, and we should always remember this when selecting a new niche to tap or a market to dive head first into.

Not saying that other niche markets are not beneficial or profitable….but let’s say you have the choice between two niches that you feel have potential.

You want to go with the one that is more appealing online than it is offline.

Male enhancement pills online are a MASSIVE market.

Why?

Because no one wants to walk into a store or go to their doctor and discuss their lack of "size" or their performance issues in that specific area.

People buy weight loss pills online because they are embarrassed by their weight, and don’t want to have to go to a doctor and be grilled about their exercise and eating habits.

People buy wrinkle creams, acne systems, skin care products online….because they don’t want to admit they have a skin care/acne/wrinkle problem.

People even buy internet marketing courses, books, and advice packages, becuase they dont want to admit in person that they dont know the answers to those questions.

Obviously this relates to a TON of stuff...gas problems, scars, getting your ex back, seduction tips, and on and on and on.

They just want the issue to go away and have everyone wonder how they look, feel, act so darn good.

See how a bar of soap, although it has a massive market, just does not have the same online effect?

Something to keep in mind guys……..

Be sure to write them all down, Drew! You could have a million dollar idea while driving how from work, and forget it when you actually get home....

Hahaha..you're telling me. I have a bluetooth, not for emergencies or talk to anyone on the phone about anything in particular...but solely in order to phone my wife and force her to furiously scribble down my thoughts that flow through the floodgates from time to time..

LOL....oh man, this is classic. I keep a pen and paper in my car, and HAVE pulled off to the side of the road on occasion when I had an overwhelming idea I didn't want to forget....

I had a 45 min drive to and from college, back in the college commuting days, and, there were times where I would have this idea, but I would completely forget it by the time I got home....or I had to err towards reciting it over and over and over again, just so I wouldn't forget it....lol

You should see the pad of paper next to my bed...filled with scribbles, ideas, and a mish mash of stuff.

I tend to come up with weird stuff when sleeping and then jolt awake...problem is half of what I write is either completely illegible...or just plain nuts. Often when I wake up in the morning and read what I wrote.....even my dog questions my sanity.

Usually you'll find the same on my pad....but, with a conglomerate of lines and arrows scattered throughout...pointing one note to another note to another note....akin to those unorganized college students who have arrows drawn all over there notes

Hmmm...I wonder if we could scan in our combined note pads, add artistic flair, and sell them as a WSO guaranteeing people that they can make $0.50 a week with our ideas?

I smell a big time JV here.

Oh boy....ALOT of ideas running through my brain right now....

We may have to take this to PM....

One thing I DID do...when I was providing 'status updates' leading to the release of one of my products, I actually took pictures of my notepad, to display all my thoughts, to potential customers, prior to release. People LOVED the level of transparency that showed....there's something incredibly unique and transparent, and helps to foster trust, when you do something like that....

That is powerful stuff to say the least.

Simply putting a face behind the product, and showing genuine thought, interest, and personality is one of the most inspiring selling points and tools you can use.

And it is important to always remember the unique appeal and strength of pen and paper...with all the technology we have there is something far more personal, and relatable to dot-jot notes and handwritten stuff. Whether you use it in the way that you mentioned, handwrite letters to potential JV partners, or even mail in a handwritten cover letter to a prospective employer....its a great way to go old school and set yourself a part.

Thank you. Great information. I am new to marketing and joined a couple forums. Do you have a blog where you post on a regular basis. Just wondering because I would like to subscribe and read other things that you have to say.

Thank you for the kind words. I do have a few personal blogs where I post on a regular basis, but they are not at the point as of yet where I am proud enough of them to point anyone in their direction.

No subcriber list as of yet either......take action Drew...TAKE ACTION...geez.

And when I used to sort through my Notepads, pretty much 90% was helping me to come up with the real solid 10% that was left. There's no way everyone's notepad is full of nuggets and no fluff.
Agreed...100%. Sifting through my notes is kind of relatable to going through an encyclopedia that is 500 years out of date.

I found a note the other day mentioning, " consider social networking site creation where users can create profiles and interact with one another, connect, discuss, and engage"..

Hmmmm...I think I MAY have slightly missed the boat on that one.
