being a successful Internet marketer has provided me with a stable financial environment but unfortunately my physical social interactions have been left in the dust.

I have started back up in school not to earn a particular degree but in order to expand my physical interactivity with my community.

Have You Experienced the Same Situation?

Are you A shy Internet marketer?

If so please share with us how this has affected your life.it

    Tonio.

This is one thing that a lot of Internet marketers suffer and I call it the "unhealthy IM syndrome"...

Lack of exercise and sleep can leave you unhealthy, snappy and will leave you burnt out.

It just baffles me as to why many Internet Marketer's do not go to the gym.

Healthy diet is important. Without it, you will not get far in life.

Social interaction with other people is important - I do that on a regular basis and visit my friends and relatives.

Yea I agree when you making money from the computer you feel you don't need to go anywhere, Trust me I know but after listen to Eben Pagan i got up and start jog, and my wife and I are going to get a gym membership.

Far as talking to people i don't have a hard time with that when I go to live events i'm never to shy to talk. Just keep working at it my friend keep being around people and that shyness will go away...

LOL I would avoid talking to people online just for the sake of "interaction", I think he meant the fact that he does not really have time to go out and interact with real life people..

I totally agree with you, Imran! Years ago I had a tendency to sit up late in the night working for hours and getting way too little sleep. Consequently my social relationships really suffered from all this work. And I got too little physical exercise.

I still work late sometimes, but now I've really realized and experienced the importance of getting exercise, meeting other people (in the "real" world) and getting away from the computer. Sometimes, when I'm sitting in front of my computer, my wife has suddenly called on me asking me to help with something. Earlier I sometimes got a little bit annoyed by such interruptions, but today I've realized that such interruptions often is a great way to re-frame my whole perspective. Often, when I return to the computer after having done some physical work in the garden etc., I find that it's much easier to concentrate and focus on the online tasks I want to do.

In fact, working in shorter intervals (working for 45 min., then getting away from the computer and doing something else, then working for 45 min. again, and , then getting away from the computer and doing something else, then working for 45 min. again etc. etc.) has really made a difference in how I work today.

Years ago I read something really interesting in psychologist Neil Fiore's famous book on Procrastination, The Now Habit. On page 71 of that book he tells about an interesting study he made. In this study he followed and studied students that took many years to finish their educations. And then he compared these students to the students that finished their studies and education much faster. The difference? Now, that's really interesting. You see, the difference was that the students that finished their studies much faster took time to socialize with their friends. They took time to exercise, get away from the books etc. The slow students, on the other hand, always seemed to "work". They always studied the books. When their friends (that probably got fewer and fewer ;-) invited them to something, the long term students always excused themselves, because they had to study. But the actual result was that these students took much longer time to finish their studies.

I find that very interesting. And since then I've tried to break up the longer working periods into shorter spurts. I get outside, exercise, take a walk, make a lot of push-ups, call someone, visit some friends, take a nap or whatever. The result has really been positive. Now I don't as easily get burned out as I did earlier. When something annoys me online, I forget about it when I exercise or visit some friends. And afterwards it's often much easier to solve the problem in a calm way.

        Best,
        Klaus Dahl

    Great point you make Ty.

I also think some IM people have a lot of self esteem issues if their business is not doing well.

It has happened to me in the past and the best solution for me was not to sit on the pc all day and feel sorry for myself but look after my health first.

I don't think it matters whether you're talking to people and interacting right now. If you make a lot of money and don't have to work at a job, you'll have plenty of time to meet new people and talk to others. I'd rather sit in my house and not talk to anyone while trying to achieve my goals. It's more important to make a lot of money than go outside and socialize with some people you probably won't know in a few years. People will always come and go anyway, so there's really no point to force yourself out to socialize with others.

Just got back from the gym myself

It's definitely true that the IM lifestyle doesn't usually allow for the constant banter you find in more traditional 9-5 settings. You have to make a deliberate attempt to stay connected to the "outside" world.

One of the big perks to working for yourself online: It's AWESOME being able to do stuff while everyone else is at work. I would never try to compete with all those weekend warriors going to the beach -- going at 11 AM on a Wednesday is more my style

Just this morning I enjoyed breakfast at a place that is impossible to get into on the weekend -- my friend and I were the only ones there

Going shopping, to the bank, or even waiting for the cable guy are all much more enjoyable if you work for youself.

I think its a good habit to turn off the monitor (who really turns off their computer these days?), get out of the computer chair and go find an adventure. I think no matter how successful I get at this, I will still yearn for that social interaction with my friends.

    Very interesting thread!

I have thought about this a lot. I spend more time communicating with people virtually than I do physically interacting with people. Just be sure to stay in touch with friends, go out on weekends, talk to girls etc.

It's easy to get lost in this virtual world. Money never sleeps!

Also, I have found that being an internet marketer is a great conversation topic. Think about it. Everybody uses the internet. Chicks dig it, trust me ;-)

I'm a shy, introverted internet marketer. I do get lost in the day to day activities online. But since I'm married and a mom of 2, I constantly have to interact with my family. I see my inlaws, and sister in law/family on a daily basis. Since we moved to a different state, I don't get to see my side of the family or friends I grew up with except on Facebook. I talk to them on the phone at least a few times a week.

I try to get out of the house several times a week to get fresh air and to "unplug". I take walks with the family to the park and school. And we go places like the zoo and the musuem. My husband and I also workout daily to stay fit because we want to be around a long time for each other and our kids. It helps a lot.

And kronus - that's an excellent point that I agree with.

Fortunately, I'm not. I've always been a social person offline and online plus I do take care of my health (I regularly go the gym to meet my gym buddy). For me, health is always important and even if you consider yourself successful, you still won't look like it if you're too weak to enjoy life even longer so I recommend putting this kind of lifestyle to many internet entrepreneurs by outsourcing so you could have enough time to check on yourself.

I find this posting interesting, because I often come across ads that say something to the effect of 'live the dream, work at home' frankly, I can't imagine something more boring.

I like working with other people, even if I'm not working with them. In a lot of big cities there are art/creative spaces you can rent out, even if it's just a desk. I definitely recommend looking at this if you want to mix with more people

Working online or from home can be isolating. Sometimes you need to force yourself to go out and place yourself in social situations. Unfortunately its indicative of future trends, some kids can text and facebook, but fail miserably with face to face social interaction.

I decided the healthiest thing to do was to get an imaginary friend. His name is Jim and he sits with me and watches me work all day. Sometimes we will even go out to lunch or dinner together but he always insists I drive - he says it's safer that way.

man.. living in Japan and doing IM is not a good mix for keeping up the social skills.

I still teach some English classes and try to hang out with other foreigners nearby
but my English speaking has suffered.. my Japanese is crap too so I'm stuck in between!

I go out for a walk nearly every day so I feel alright health wise. but, yeah, being
on the pc just typing can really do damage to speaking and interaction skills I feel...

The hubby and I hit the trail every am for 4 miles when the weather is good, and then play racquetball when the weather isn't quite so nice. But even when I worked at home before we were married, I still had a lot of friends and an active social life, and a pretty healthy lifestyle - but it probably also had a lot to do with the fact that I lived in Calif at the time, and most of the social activities were outdoors and often sports related. Living in Ohio now, things are a bit different but my own lifestyle hasn't changed that much - just some adaptations due to weather and age (the knees don't do well over 10 miles any more!).

I also like being able to eat when and what I want - not always possible in a more normal corp or workplace situation.

I spent a long time in the corporate world and I don't miss it at all - the games, the politics, etc. Much prefer working form home - and have never, ever found it boring! Quite the opposite actually!

    Hi Tonio,

I know exactly what you mean. Having an online business coupled with the convenience of online shopping and chatting over the computer, there's rarely reason to leave home.

The first few years since I started my business from home, I hardly interacted with the outside world. Furthermore, I was living in a suburban state where people spoke different language. Thus the only times I went out of home would be to go for a jog in the mornings and/or evenings.

My social life was rotting drastically and that was a big reason why I moved out to the city and live on my own, though it meant no mommy cooking meals for me or helping around the house while I do my own stuff.

Ever since I moved to city, I started making friends around and I make it a point to leave home every weekend (at the very least!) and to add, nothing to do with computers where possible!

If you're doing financially well I also suggest traveling abroad. Meet people from other cultures, it will be an awesome experience :-)

This is actually why I went back to work. Not that I needed to, but I was getting lonely. If I was not at StomperNet around other marketers then I would have probably not went back, but this is not a bad environment.

What I did even before I went back to a day job was that I would get up early every morning, get dressed and either go out for coffee or breakfast. Then lots of days instead of going back home to work I would go to the library or bookstore, pretty much anywhere that had free wireless. Not only did this allow me to keep my interaction with others up it also allowed me to make some interesting contacts. You would be surprised at how many people work out of the public library.

I don't understand how a successful affiliate marketer can lose touch
    with life.

I mean yeah, at the beginning stage you put in every single minute of the
day into this thing. But after some weeks when things are starting to get
better and better you should have enough free time to at least go to the
gym and get some exercise while talking to other people and just having
    some fun.

The only time when we are detached from life is when we work, because
we work alone. But hey, you can go out after work like everybody else.

Why keep crying... We have so much luck to be IMers because we can
manage our schedules and have so much free time if we do things right.

You know what sucks? Before I started Internet Marketing I was working
16 hours a day 6 days a week sometimes even 7 days at a big hotel here
in Italy. I worked in a seperate kitchen and was basically alone for 8 to 9
hours everyday washing dishes. That was hard.

Sorry, but I do get a little mad when I read people complaining about such
things, when we are so lucky being IMers. Don't take it personal my fellow
    warrior.

I agree. That's exactly how I see it. You're going to eventually have a lot of free time if you do things correctly and make a living online. The money is more important. Interacting with people will eventually come when you have the time to do it and can actually support your lifestyle. If you work at a physical job all the time, you won't be able to interact with a lot of different people. Interacting with the same people at a job will eventually get boring anyway.
