Microsoft are Pathetic

I'm trying to list a client's website in the bing local business section but the site that lets me do this does not allow you to view anything with Google Chrome.

Surely this is blatant anti-competitive tactics?

I'm a bit pissed I have to download and install their software to do this.

Well if that's the case they are shooting themselves in the foot - this one thing won't make people stop using chrome, but it will stop people visiting their site.

      For those using Chrome:

      ssl.bing.com/listings/UnsupportedBrowser.aspx

Or judging by the URL; for those using any browser.

It does say you can use Firefox. But do they link to Firefox? Nay. If Bing wants to be successful they can't keep this anti-competitive stuff up imo.

To be fair, you can find examples of this sort of thing with other browsers and companies too. It's all a bit pointless though, isn't it...

Hmmm... i use the latest firefox but hey say it was not supported.
Microsoft are making bad points here.
They will not win the internet battle against others.

It's also possible that they haven't updated their site to include Chrome, although it's now been around for a few years there are still sites that don't recognize it when the read the HTTP User Agent.

    - AWeber only started recognizing Chrome early this year.
    - 1 & 1 wouldn't accept it for their control panel, says it's too old!
    - Many bank & finance sites still don't recognize it.

So I wouldn't be so quick to accuse them of favoritism, their actual crime may just be not keeping up with the latest trends (which admittedly is not a good thing for the worlds largest software company).

IMO, no browser is more important than a particular site and it's use, I think this is true for most people who actually use specific sites as opposed to just surfing for entertainment.

I use Bing Local just fine with Firefox, so I don't think it's a competitive issue - maybe Chrome just isn't important enough at this point.

I do not agree with you. It may also happen with other websites too. May be this is the fault of Google Chrome and it can also not open other similar sites too. I do not think that these companies will play such a cheap game.

    Thanks

I was just going to say. It's very innocent to believe that Microsoft are some sort of holier than thou company.

According to W3Schools (Browser Statistics), the percentage of Chrome users is only about 15%.

Individual statistics may vary. I checked one of my popular sites and it's getting more Lynx users than Chrome users.

So, it may be that Bing hasn't seen a high enough demand yet from Chrome users to make whatever changes may be necessary to their site to get Chrome to work with it.

microsoft.com works just fine. I might just be being cynical here but when dealing with the search engine Bing, using rival search engine's Chrome I get an error message.

Microsoft actually tried to take over the internet!

They changed Java to make nearly ALL programs written by programmers using their code to be INCOMPATIBLE! That would be FINE with the industry, and SUN(java's developer and owner), but they HAD to openly declare when functionality wasn't compatible. They FOUGHT IT IN COURT! They LOST! So they created C#, to try to fracture the market!

They tried to KILL other browsers by including only THEIRS with windows, and they FOUGHT IT IN COURT!

They tried to get rid of ANY interactivity, outside of IE, by creating Basicscript! Luckily, by the time it caught on, people got wise to their game, and didn't fall for it.

They tried to kill PERL and PHP, through ASP and frontpage extentions.

ODD that a company that made its FIRST break by providing a somewhat standard language, now FIGHTS standards. HECK, Their VB isn't even really basic anymore.
