Local keyword research

I would like to see if someone can point me to some good online info on local keyword research, or explain your method. The best I found is too simply research like you normally would and then just add you geo-targeted words ( like name of city + the word "in" ) either before or after keyword phrase.

For example, if I want to research how people look for an a/c contractor in their home city, whats the best way to go about it?

Is there a WSO or guide somewhere?

Thanks

I will first do the research on the generic keyword then once I have an idea of competition and all I go in with the geo-targeted words though you may find at times that there are no results being displayed for that keyword.

Most people will not put quotes in the search as
many of us marketers do to drill down and find
    exactly what we're looking for.

The best thing to do is ask one of your friends
or family members who know nothing about
internet marketing. Sit the in front of the
computer and ask them how they would search
if they were looking for a local painter or
    something.

I'm constantly surprised as what people do
when searching for things online - or even
    when using a computer.

One of my relatives would actually hit the
back button all the way to their home page
after they were finished browsing for an
hour or two before they shut off! I couldn't
    believe it.

    I explained the Internet isn't like a book, it's
OK to just click on the X button.

Thanks Jason and Texas Guns for your responses

Jason- that's what I'm already doing

Texas Guns - thanks, I believe there has to be a better approach, so many people search in so many ways, I gonna assume your relative which goes all the way back before they get off the computer , also searches differently then others.

side note for Texas guns - I went to Clear Brook High School in Pearland and met my wife in Katy, small world, huh?
