What To Do? Big Advertiser Wants Non-Affiliate Link In My Review

Hi everyone,

In my niche there are approximately 15 affiliate advertisers - some bigger than others. One fairly big advertiser for whom I have numerous web pages linking to their products, is asking that I link from my review of the new product to its newly dedicated website/sales page ... and here's the kicker - there is no affiliate link available and yet they still are requesting the link. I have an affiliate link to a parent website selling the same product, but this advertiser wants a link to the product's dedicated site - a freebie link.

I'm relatively new to affiliate marketing and so I'm not sure if there's affiliate marketing etiquette I should be aware of where when a big advertiser wants such a favor I should comply in order to curry favor. Perhaps I'm paranoid; it would not be fatal to my site to lose this advertiser, but I do okay from this advertiser and expect to do well by them in the future (and they do well by me).

They tell me no affiliate link is in the works. Another thought I had is maybe an affiliate link is in the works, but they want the freebie link up front (testing dedication, loyalty, etc.) and then will grant it later (yeah, maybe I'm a bit cynical).

What do I do? Do I say absolutely no way that will I place a non-affiliate link, or do I give them the freebie? Has anyone had any similar experiences to this? Of course I'm inclined to say not a chance and establish this as my policy. This review was published yesterday and is already attracting okay traffic.

Thanks in advance

Not sure what you should do, but I will teell you what I would do. I would ignore them, or I would tell them that if they want links to their site, then go build them. It is not your job to build free back links to their site. If they don't want to pay you for the referrals, then I wouldn't refer anyone. What is the point. This is a business, and as such you are in it for the pay day.

If they don't understand that, I would consider changing all my links to their affiliate site to something else that would fit. Even if I had to change the content of my site a bit to accomodate it.

But I am a bit of a jerk when I think I am being screwed. You may not be so blunt as I am.

They're in the same business you're in...They should know better. You're stressing about this and I'd be willing to bet that they sent this message out to all their affiliates to see who'd bite.

Email them and ask them when the affiliate link will be available. Let them know that it's your company's policy to only link when there is an affiliate commission set up and that you will be more than happy to do that for them when they get you the link.

You have something they want, negotiate. Do not walk away if there might be money on the table. If there is no affiliate commission, tell them there is a charge/fee for link or ask them what they can do for you in exchange.

I would look for similar products from other businesses which do have affiliate links, and then I would link to those instead. You could do a comparison review and favour the ones with the affiliate links (if they are worthy of course).

Thanks everyone for your responses. I'll certainly follow the sage advice.

Update, I responded to the advertiser's request with a "I'll consider it, but I don't think so because it's a business and I spend a lot of time writing content etc." The advertiser then responded explaining no link necessary and that they weren't in the affiliate department and were outside their area.

      Thanks again
