Does anyone know how to clear a WordPress permalink?

I made a page with a permalink of "domain.com/news" I deleted it and now want a category with the news slug, again "domain.com/news" but wordpress keeps reassigning the category slug to be "domain.com/news-2".

How do I "clear" that news permalink and tell wordpress that I want to use it for a category instead?

    Try clearing them by changing the permalink settings to something else, then changing it back.

    Fair warning: It's possible I'm arguing with you because I have nothing better to do.

  • Make sure the "news" page isn't in your "Trash" folder.

    Go to Pages->Edit Pages->Trash

      Thats the ticket. It is still in your 'trash' bin. You need to delete it from there permanently.

    @ VegasGreg & Chris Landrum I had permanently deleted the page.
    @ Colin Theriot I tried it and it still doesn't work

    This is really frustrating... I'm sure others have had this problem at some point.

      I could be wrong but I think once you create a page it stays in the database even if you delete it. Seems like I have had to go into the database and manually delete them a couple of times. Been awhile so I would not swear to it and there may well be another way to fix the problem but that is how I took care of it.

      Just access your database via phpmyadmin or whatever tool you have and delete the page.

    It is also possible that there is a 'tag' or 'post' that has the same name that needs to be trashed and deleted from trash.

    Permanently deleting normally solves it.

    If you want to give me access to wp-admin, I will be glad to go in and take a look.
