Kindle is Oprah's new favorite - Will this boost Kindle sales?

Hey folks,

After much hype, Oprah unveiled her new "favorite gadget" today and it's the Amazon Kindle.

I was guessing it would be the Kindle because the home page of Amazon.com had a little video teaser of Oprah announcing that she would unveil it today, plus right below it was info about the Kindle.

Since Oprah has the magic touch, I wonder if this means the Kindle will have a surge in sales.

Sure it's a little pricey, but Oprah has a gazillion followers.

What do you think this would mean for those of us who write ebooks? Anything?

I think most everything Oprah recommends has a surge in sales....So I would say yes it will.

But probably not as much as other products. I don't know if it's me, or I just have this picture in my head of the Oprah demographics...but I don't see many 30-55 year-old women laying down that kind of cash to read off of a screen...I just don't see it.

Mark my words - Kindle will become a household name as a result of Oprah's passionate endorsement.

Effect on e-book sales? Very little if any.

    Best regards,

The audience members each received a free Kindle at the beginning of the show and Oprah had a brief interview with Jeff Bezos.

Those folks in the audience sure seemed excited, but I think many of them would've been excited if they unwrapped shoe strings -- anything as long as they could say they were a gift from Oprah.

FYI, in case anyone wants to order a Kindle within the next few days, there's a $50 discount if you go to Oprah.com and order from there.

Kindle like any other product will see a nice peak from the mention.

The system will have to earn that position on its own, it does have the potential, and it will be fun to watch it grow.

I have wanted a Kindle for a looooooong time....way before Oprah endorsed it. I just haven't had that kind of cash to spend on myself.

I am a 42 year old woman but I am not much of an Oprah fan.

      I just want a Kindle!!!!!!!!!

      Hi,

No-one else mentioned that this means that Oprah is now a fully fledged internet affiliate marketer, using her TV program to make sales though her site, in direct competition with any of us who sell hard goods online.

Opportunity factor? Consulting to other big cheeses about how they can do the same, and how they can upsell, cross-sell, opt in and use continuity on their raving fans.

Best ask our resident TV star Mr. Filsaime to get some phone numbers. Oh, and Mo-Fo is friendly with Springer...

I also hear Gordon Brown is promoting a new type of grill on late night TV that drains off the fat...he has money problems you see...

You can bet your sweet bippy, if Oprah endorses a product, it will turn to gold. I sure wish I had that kind of power.

Everything she touches turns to gold.

What if she makes a spin-off book club, "Oprah's E-book Club" exclusively to Kindle? It's not that far fetched an idea, is it? "Download it on your KINDLE. Love the KINDLE! Ladies! Don't you just Love it! E-books! yeah!"

As a side note, they stopped airing he show here in Sweden a couple of years ago due to the amunt of product endorsements, as it would go against TV marketing/sponsorship regulation!

Sony has a worthy competitor to the Kindle and they seem to be neck-and-neck in the quality/functionality race. Amazon's marketing power and the Oprah endorsement should put the Kindle firmly in the lead.

I'm waiting until they get their 2nd generation reader out. Complaints about the current one include a bar on the right that is too easy to accidentally hit and advance a page. Also, a big one for me - no backlighting. I'd like to be able to read in the dark and that can't be done with the current one.

Regarding ebooks, there is already a huge market for Kindle formatted ebooks. I'm not talking about the type we discuss here - they would be more aptly labeled reports than books. Real, full content books. You can already get just about anything you want in Kindle format.

I think when Allen "endorsed" Kindle here on the Warrior Forum it increased Kindle sales. So yeah, Oprah's endorsement ought to spur sales too.

    Cheers,
    Becky

p.s. It's not just her TV viewers -- look, we're even talking about it here. So her endorsement itself is raising some buzz even outside her niche. People are talking about Kindle -- and that will spur sales even in folks who don't really care about Oprah's endorsements.

PPS. Good idea, Markus, about the Oprah ebook club.

ALmost paper thin, letter size and great memory, run time.

I'm saving my beer cans to save up and get this puppy.
I have great difficulty reading ebooks on a monitor.
This product will make me do the Ren & Stempy dance!Happy happy Joy Joy.

Whoa! That is killer! First I've heard of that one. Huge screen will really set it apart from all the other readers. Size matters!

Oprah is definitely using some IM theories, whether she or her advisors realize it or not.

    Examples

    * Her recent online class with Eckhart Tolle, author of "A New Earth"

    * Several months ago, one of the many times that Suze Orman has been a guest, Oprah made Suze's latest book available as a free download from her site as a pdf.

    * On Fridays, Oprah has a special "live" show, with several home viewers participating in the show. Yesterday, there were 3 home viewers set up to follow along during the cooking segment via Skype.

(INTERESTING LITTLE TIDBIT: The cooking session was led by former supermodel Cristina Ferrare, ex-wife of the infamous John DeLorean. Oprah says Cristina is the best cook ever. Talk about reinventing yourself -- from supermodel to standing by your man during the controversial DeLorean fiasco to cooking with the O.)

      Hi,

Slightly off-topic, but as we're talking about a TV person using IM...

I noticed today, while advertising a kid's program on TV, at the end of the advert, they used a 'splash' screen (is that the right word? A graphical image containing the name of the program, the time and date it is on) and this graphical image was designed using typical web 2.0 style.

It appears that online trends are now influencing TV trends, instead of vice-versa - something I haven't come across before.

Anything that Oprah mentions on her show will generate millions of dollars for that lucky product owner, the big O has tons of followers and that's how it is!

I watched this episode as well, I said to my husband, that it just got a couple of million dollars of sales. The Ceo of Amazon & creator of it, did offer $50 off if you used the special code. I have looked at it to buy, I think it's neat. I think because Oprah's passion is for books, I think it was a good endorsement for her to do. She actually doesn't do well operating electronics, but said this was easy. I also think for those of us who read a lot and subscribe to newspapers that in the long run you would actually save as most of the downloads for books are $9.99 even if the book is $29.99 on the shelf. I wouldn't think it would affect e-books as those are a little bit different. Great post!

I would love to buy a Kindle and am saving my pennies. I would also like to know more about creating ebooks and selling them on Amazon for the Kindle. I have done some research about it in the past, and it seems to me that Amazon takes a big percentage.

You can offer .pdfs to Kindle readers. I think there is a 10 cent charge (something relatively inconsequential) to convert your doc into Kindle ebook format and download, I think, as an email sent to your Kindle. Second option is download from computer to Kindle via USB. It's been a while since I looked this up, so if it's not totally accurate, it is pretty close.

Carol you cannot buy a Kindle in Canada at this time. One of the features of the Kindle is the wireless download of material, The New York Times on your Kindle every morning automatically for example.

Amazon hasn't set anything with up with wireless providers here yet I guess so only US residents can purchase. At least that was what happened to me when I tried to purchase.

Kindle V2 is on it's way and is supposedly much improved.

I don't think the Plastic Paper product is really the same thing as a Kindle so I don't see how it will hurt sales, perhaps down the road.

I don't think the Sony product does wireless downloads but I'm not certain.
