500 Visits & Not One Gosh Dam Click!

I have steadily built my website to attract around 300 to 600 visits a day with around 300 to 1000 pages views a day. Not bad, I'll take it.

Within this past 4 months of blogging, I have tried banner ads, Google adsense, text links, affiliate ads, & Amazon ads and links & widgets.

I've placed these ads at the very top, at the very bottom, left, right, big ads, small ads, inside the post, double ads, etc.

In the end, I have had NOT 1 sale from any affliliate links! I have some clicks from Adsense. There are days when I get 500 visits and NO clicks to any Adsense ads...I take that back, I earn .02cents. Within the 4 months of blogging, I've generated about $10 from adsense and that's it.

My website gets male and female users and from all demographics so it is very hard to target specific my ads because all ages and genders & religious denomination visit my site.

It's funny, my other website that is target specific, I get about 5-10 visits a day and yet, I have had 5 sales from this site.

My question to you GURUS out there, I can I monetize my website to maximize my website more effectively? Anyone else experience this and were able to find a soultion?

I'll post my resolve if someone provides some suggestions.

Thank you

It's hard to answer your question, without having a look at what your website looks like.

It seems to me it is not properly optimized for conversion. Ad placement, right products/offers....etc. and such. While your other site is properly optimized.

Do you have analytics or some other tracking software installed on the site? If not you need to do so.

That many visits and that few sales makes me think that the traffic is not matching the content of the site or the ads themselves are not matching the content of the site.

You need to look at where your visitors are coming from and what they are doing once they reach your site. That info will help a lot in trying to figure out the problem.

You need to have the ability for visitors to become subscribers and then customers. You may need an optin space on your website to collect email addresses

Agreed...perhaps you should create an opt-in for your visitors in order to go from a fire and forget setup to a more evenly controlled sales barrage.

    Traffic itself means nothing.

    You need targeted traffic.
You need a powerful call to action.
You need a lead capture system.

This is the key right here. If your site has good focus and a fairly narrow niche, the people who take the time to find it will be people who really, really want what you have. Making sales is easy then and you don't need boatloads of traffic.

It could be because your traffic is not targeted enough.

      Or...

It could be that you haven't pre-sold your traffic. You're expecting them to click on banner ads, and that doesn't always work.

You're doing a good job of getting the traffic, so now you need to make that traffic convert.

Perhaps sending them to a page that pre-sells the product you're promoting. Do a thorough review about it.

I also like what other people said. Put an opt-in form on your site. Give away a free report to get people to opt-in. That way your traffic is yours and you cna build a relationship, offer tips and promote products over time.

It sounds to me that your website doesn't target anything in particular. Most big generic sites needs thousands of visitors a day to make anything substantial.

The fact that your smaller site, which is tightly targetted to a specific product/niche should tell you that.

You really need to understand WHO your customer is before you build a site to make money from.

But since your question was how to monetise the traffic then we will need to either see the site, or know what sort of content/information you have on it. Certain sites do better with Amazon, other's make a killing with Adsense. Not all sites can be monetised with any affiliate program you feel like adding to it - you need to understand what the customer would be looking for first.

Give us some more information and we should be able to help.

This is part of the answer, but targeting, sometimes, is not enough....is your market hungry for or actively seeking the solution you're offering?...are they seeking immediate benefit?

Yeah, you're getting alot of traffic, but apparently, the people visiting your site aren't being inspired to take action..it could be the market you've chosen (even if it's targeted) or your content

i'm speaking from experience..for example..right now i have 5 blogs for adsense (actually 6, but 1 doesn't get any clicks because i was a blog newbie when i did it and I didn't know then.... what i know now about good templates, ad placement, etc.)

    they are ...
    Foods Lower Blood pressure, Right?
    Sinus Remedy
Get Rid Yeast Infection, Home Remedies for Yeast Infections
Dual Colon Cleanse, Dual Action Cleanser Colon, Buy, Order, Best
Women Hair Restoration, Discount Hair Replacement, Buy, Order

They are all targeted, however the 1st 3 are my money makers, by far, with the 1st, now being the leader....i have not made 1 affiliate sale, but the adsense brings $20-30 per month.

the sites have been up a little over a year..and i stay on the 1st page for them all....but with the 1st 2, ive been on the dance floor with google again for the past month..

anyway, the 1st 3 that make me the most money are not only targeted, but they also solve immediate problems..the people coming to those 3 are looking to take action..

to "lower" their blood pressure or "get rid of" their yeast infection or "remedy" their sinus headache

If you are getting the traffic and no sales, maybe selling ad space on your site can be a nice income stream....

Just my 2 cents...I hope this helps

      Eric,
Nice looking sites and I commend you for sharing them with the rest of the forum members. Have you experimented with changing the adsense color schemes for the other sites to see if it increases your CTR/earnings for them?

Thanks everyone for your response and suggestions.

I knew when I created this website, it was NOT going to be target specific. I wanted to create the website to get the traffic based on the topic.

Many of you have suggested creating an opt-in form. I guess that way, if they put their email address in, I can pitch my product but, I would still have the problem of not knowing the targeted customer.

I'm still confused:confused: on what I should do with the website. I'm thinking about just selling it and focus on more direct targeted websites that I have. It's just that it would be nice to be able to convert the traffic that I get with this website. There are days I get 1000 visits a day. Maybe I'll focus more on Adsense ads...stay tuned

Write an article that you bring with great pride a newsletter subscription for your visitors, so that they can be better updated about your services... with 500 visits per day it should work well.

It depends on where your traffic is coming from. Targetted traffic is much effective.

For correct suggestion give us the link of your website.

2nd thing is make your website targeted. Target on one or two topics at once when you get success in those then enhance it more.

From your 1st post I think you make it like bulk data site which have a lot of different but not specific collection.

You know, I thought about this issue when I wrote this post because I knew people would be asking for this. In a different forum, I submitted my website to the forum for analysis, for a site that had similar success with this site in question, in terms of traffic and even had a few sales and within a few weeks, I had some very similar sites, even 1 site that was using my post feeds for their site

Are there any products related to your sites theme? Specific product pages can turn your general visitors into a targeted visitor interested in something specific. Just spread your product page links around your site. Those interested will click them to read more and are much more likely to click on an ad.

Adsense pays more on product type pages versus general information pages. Doubled what I earn by adding product pages to a content site.

My local hiking site was not making any money for me. Too general, hikers just want the trail info and the occasional amazon book.

I added pages for products like rain jackets, trekking poles, binoculars, cameras, packs, boots and so on. Sprinkled links for these pages though out the whole site, including the navbar but mostly on the bottom of pages.

They get a lot of clicks now. And the adsense pays well for visitors looking at products.

The visitor finds something they are interested in for you. Stats tell you what to push.

Most of the pages are simple to make. Just a bunch of short descriptions with the top product names, maker, price. Along with 1 or two adsense blocks.

Good old fashion article writing. Plain and simple. It's hard work to consistently write 300 - 400 words per article every day but it brings the traffic and the search engines love it.

    Hi ellers,

Its all a numbers game. More Articles, Directory submissions, keywords, the content of your site. More traffic and more sales. If your website is offering solutions to customers needs. Customers will buy.

If I were you this is what i would do:
    - Identify a few successful authority sites that are doing what I am trying to do
    - Identify what monetization methods they are using
    - Pick ONE of the monetization method and implement it on my site following their model
    - Start testing in one week intervals while modifying one variable at a time
    - Focus solely on that monetization method until I get to a predetermined benchmark
    - Add a second monetization method and repeat the process

The monetization method affect the the way you write your content, so it's usually important to determine that before writing. but since you already have the content, the next best thing is to determine what the people visiting your site want to do next after reading your content. Try to answer this question to choose the first one you will focus on.

Also, how's your bounce rate? I believe if your bounce rate is low enough it means people are spending too much time on your site enjoying your so helpful content they don't need anything else. If you want them to do buy something, you can't answer all their questions on your site.

Check the most popular article on your site and rewrite it slightly (depending on the mnonetization method you have selected). you'll just need to rewrite the beginning and the end just to imply that they'll need to take another action to really get the solution and track the CTR after the change. Of course you will be doing only one thing at a time for a few days so that you can attribute the changes, if any, to that particular action.

now, I realize doing all this may seem daunting, and sometimes, depending on how much mistakes you made on the site, it might too hard to correct the course. You will need to decide if it worth it AT THIS TIME.

What i am trying to say is that you have learned a lot on this failing site. maybe you should let it go for a while and focus on what is making you money and make that earn you more money. You can then come back to that site once you have the level of income you need.

I say that because you already have a site making you money and your effort will be best spent trying to reproduce that success. You know how to drive traffic and you know how to build a targeted site. You also need to realize that an authority site is just a bunch of niche sites on one domain. Reproduce the success of that small site whether by building more small ones or by building one site and microniches as categories.

I hope you can find something useful in this long post.

    Sandrine

Get an opt-in list going ASAP. Give something of value as bait.

Secondly, in terms of how much dosh you make per visitor, if you have a product or can create something really in demand in your niche, why not offer it for free behind a survey gateway with either CPALead (their splash ads remove the survey aspect and tend to attract more clicks than Adsense) or Sharecash (which now has a non-survey viral option)? I find that these pay me FAR more than adsense these days.
