I know of no free ecover creators that make ecovers worth looking at.

IMO, you're better off going without the ecover than to put something
up on your site that is going to make it look cheap and unprofessional.

        Steve,

What about an eBook cover creator that isn't free? Do you know of a good one?

I know if a couple of fair ones, but still nothing I would put on one of my
          sales pages.

I'd either go and learn Photoshop and get some quality action scripts or
get a designer to make the cover for you.

I've had good results using a program called 3D Cover Extreme.

I don't remember the exact price, but it was inexpensive . . .

"Box Shot 3D" is awesome, does soft and hard cover books + various software boxes. Course you need a 2d design to plug into it but the finished results look like photographs - seriously. Cant remember how much it is but its woth it

    Hey man,

I knew of a really good one, though it wasn't free. But, I can't seem to find it anymore.

A good website to get your covers done is at sweetcovers.com

A top guru gets most of his done there ^

    Hope this helps.

You should invest in a good ecover, as it has a lot to say for the percieved value of your product, for your customers.

And I would say it's not point in taking the time to learn how to create mediocre ecovers, when you can get professional, good ones for as little as $10.
My first ecover was from a guy named "Livingcovers" here on the WF. He did a great job, was very flexible, as well as affordable. I'm sure he can give you a good deal =)

This is a great way to make something decent on the fly for free. If you make a simple one dimensional cover using Gimp (or PS) and don't have an action script or template (or have reached the limits of your Gimp/PS knowledge to make it into a 3D cover) , then this is ideal to make your image into a cover.

There are limited designs for free but its only $3 per cover for the paid for designs which is pretty cheap.(I see some outsourcers charging $30 for this work...maybe an opening there. lol).

EDIT: To show how the free ones come out I made this.

Image is krappie but it took all of 10 minutes from start to finish (so please don't all pile in on my awful design!). Could be acceptable if more time & care is taken in the image design Btw, I am not an affiliate.
