Succeed on the Internet? Hah...You'd Be Better Off Buying a Lottery Ticket!

I was just reading an interesting thread where one of the posters stated you'd be better off buying a lottery ticket, than you are trying to succeed on the internet...or something to that effect.

Now perhaps the poster was joking or being facetious. That being said, I would argue that your odds of succeeding on the internet are significantly higher than the odds of you winning the lottery.

How do I know? Because I'm personally making a nice living online, as are several of my friends and colleagues. But it didn't just happen by chance. It's like anything else in life, you have to learn how to do it. You have to put in the work...lots and lots of hard work. Did I mention hard work?

For example, people aren't born knowing how to drive a car. You learn how to drive by getting behind the wheel and practicing, practicing, practicing, until you're proficient enough to get your drivers license.

Well, internet marketing is no different. In order to succeed on the internet, you have to learn marketing fundamentals, and you have to practice them, over and over and over again. Along the way, you may fail a few times, but whenever you're learning something new, you're bound to fall on your face.

I failed at internet marketing many times, before that little light bulb finally came on inside of my head, and I finally figured it out. But I never gave up on myself and I never stopped learning. I read every marketing book, newsletter and article I could get my hands on. I still do.

You see, learning is the key. You have to be willing to educate yourself. If you want to succeed at internet marketing, you have to learn how to do it. You have to make certain sacrifices. You have to put in the work...lots and lots of work.

Otherwise, you are better off buying a lottery ticket.

I've went down the road of trying my luck with the lottery. I once spent $300 in one day LOL I realize, now, that I'm better off investing that money in PPC campaigns and websites.

And for the record that $300 LITERALLY only won one free ticket. Everything else in the roll was a bust. Where I live a whole role, no matter the price, is $300.

GA Lottery always did suck! :>) At one time, I could take $20 and pay my rent playing scratch off tickets in KY. Haven't tried it since I moved to TN, but when I came here I had a J.O.B.

Leave it to a New Yorker to inject some cold, hard logic into the discussion.

Unfortunately, the problem isn't always the fault of the person trying to
        make the money.

There are some marketers who add insult to injury by making promises of
insane wealth in the shortest time possible with no work at all.

If you think I'm kidding, take a look at some of those MLM or downline
building opportunities floating around and really READ those sales pages.

There is a reason why the FTC is cracking down on this industry and it's not
because they don't like the clothes we wear.

So right man - that is the problem of the problems in our community.
I'd say off the cuff that 80-90% of all promotions i got into my email box
for the past 2 years were exploiting that "easy money, fast, with little effort" hot button.
          That creates 2 further issues:
          - people getting discouraged and quitting fast
          - decent marketers having a hard time getting heard and much less trusted
because of the IM and MLM hype cluttering the space.

        Pete,

My LOTTERY HOTSHEET has kept me a "winner" for many years. Like many IM successes, when you start selling the "tools to the miners", you can break out big. Ken Silver has been selling his "how to win lottery" course for over a decade and he has thousands of subscribers.

As a fellow INFORMATION MARKETER, you know the drill (and it ain't "drill baby drill")...create a product that people WANT.

And millions of people WANT to chase the dream of winning the lottery...and they keep me and guys like Ken Silver in the WIN column. Thank you state lotteries, thank you very much.

But there is one thing in common, you have to PLAY to win...either at the lottery or at IM. And my "research" shows, the PROS, the people who spend time to learn HOW to do it, are the ones that keep cashing in, year after year after year.

        Good Luck Pete

        gjabiz

PS. Maybe you should "research" a best time to play, sort of like the best time to hunt or to fish...MAYBE, there are more winners on certain moon cycles? Sounds like a cash hotsheet to me.

I'm getting far more success on the internet than on the lottery, but I haven't bought a lottery ticket for over 10 years so perhaps that's why.

I would rather earn my fortune than win it, money earned is money better enjoyed as far as I'm concerned because it's appreciated more.

Yes, that's the way I always think about it. There's been things I've wanted to buy that I had to wait quite a while to be able to afford, but when I could finally get it, it was so rewarding.

That phrase "hard work" seems to trip up a LOT of people ...

Too many people do want the lottery ticket expect that
every program they buy will BE the winning lottery ticket
all wrapped up and ready to spend ...without the "hard work".

In order to succeed online, every move you make must be strategically executed like an expert tactician. KNOW your friends, foster the relationships, and help one another out....engaging in a bit of an 'unwritten rule' of the internet....comment relentlessly with high quality volumes of comments, on others blogs...form strategic relationships that are mutually beneficial to all parties involved.

I did this with one gentleman who, at the time I had met him and began writing on his blog, wasn't really 'anyone' online. With such a genuine story, however, and after commenting on every single one of his blog posts for over 5 months, what I had suspected would occur, occurred: he gained visibility of sites like Problogger.net, and Lifehacker....

The testimonial/review I had secured early on wound up being PURE gold....as his reputation gave credence to mine. Sometimes investing in someone, even before they are huge, can be extremely beneficial in the long run, for both parties involved.

It's amazing how people that never make money, never achieve anything on their lives go online and write that it is impossible to make money online.. And worse other people actually believe them.

I think that is our fault. In this community we sell a lot of junk and we really don't do everythng we can to help others succeed.

Hey David, excellent article, a lot of it really rang true with me. I've experienced being seduced by promises of easy riches and for basically the first year or so of my quest for IM knowledge, was reading one sales letter after another, until my head was spinning.
I'm actually now considering taking an online certificate program in IM offered by the University of San Francisco to really educate myself in the field. It's not cheap, but I'm pretty confident I'll be able to get financial aid. Anyway, thanks for all the direction and encouragement so far, it's greatly appreciated!

I've been making a good living online for quite some time too.

I think people get confused about the luck factor in any endeavour that's not a regular job with regular pay.

Yes there is an element of luck or chance involved when you're building any business (and that includes your own online business).

But persistence will overcome luck any time.

Put another way if you have a one in 100 chance of getting making a good contact who will turn your business around then all you need to do is put yourself in front of contacts 100 times or so and...hey...weren't you lucky to make that joint venture deal!

                Persistence overcomes luck.

If you're not making a good income yet then chances are you just haven't taken enough action to get results or get a good break that will take you to the next level.

The amount of work will be different for everyone but I've never seen anyone who was persistent taking intelligent action for 2-3 years or more who wasn't making good money.

Most will get there a whole lot quicker.

It can be like the lottery except that you get as many tickets as you want simply by putting in some intelligent effort.

                Kindest regards,
                Andrew Cavanagh

Not a smart move, Demian. Nowadays, everybody and their brother is offering these IM certificate programs. Why? Because it's a nice, neat legal scam. Not a scam in the traditional sense mind you, but a scam nonetheless. Because newbies throwing their money away don't know any better. You'll go into debt, and learn information you can pretty much find for free online.

The certificate they give you won't be worth the paper it's printed on. I can assure you, no one will be impressed that you have an IM certificate. It won't help you get clients, although I'm sure the people peddling these programs will tell you otherwise.

That being said, some people need a structured learning environment. And as much as I hate to admit it, those programs do provide that. Maybe you're one of those people who needs that type of structure to learn. Just don't expect that certificate to be your pathway to IM success. Because it won't be.

Great post Dave! It is interesting to me that people think going to college for 4-11 years and owing money when they are done is normal, but then don't expect much of a learning curve in the IM industry.

The thing about the lottery, it's money that doesn't usually make more money. When it's gone it's gone. Learning the skills that it takes to be a successful IM'er will give you the ability to always put some cash in your pocket, even in the offline world.

lol This thread reminds me of every time someone I know asks me to show them how I make money online. Everyone seems to want the fast track method. That's why these hyped up gurus can sell all of their b.s. products.

Their sales pages should say something along the lines of, "Let me show you how I make $10,000 a day and how you can too . . . in 5 years, if you work hard, don't get off track, and spend nearly every free waking moment in front of your computer." But I guess no one would buy then.

Making money on the internet needs to have planning. It requires patience, careful planning and good strategy. Unlike lottery, there is a 100% guarantee that you will succeed if you will persist and will not give up. I have read about people that relied their success on the lottery. Currently, I am selling online and it is not that easy at first to promote my digital products. But when I learn the right strategies, I really gained much profit.

It's the same story with any endeavor. Whoever works the hardest and the longest becomes successful.

    You are so right.

Every profession in the world requires training and education - heck, even any job (Walmart, McDonalds etc....) puts you through a few weeks of training to learn the ropes, why do we think we can just jump into Network Marketing and the Internet and just be successful?

I know I failed many times because I didn't have the right mindset and training.

To see the results, you have to put in the time and be consistent and persistant. Never give up and keep the faith - meaning, it WILL happen if you're doing your part and doing it right.

Just like working out - if you want to see the RESULTS - lean muscle and a six pack, you need to eat CLEAN consistently.
Notice I didn't say working out. That's because I believe it's easier to workout and lift weights than it is to eat clean and healthy CONSISTENTLY.

But the magic does happen if you stay in the game.

I'm starting to see that myself.......and it feels GOOOOOOOOOD!!!!!!!!!!!

Most people get distracted by the shiny new objects. What people fail to realize is the fact that internet marketing basically revolves around a few time tested principles: Get traffic, build a list, foster great relationships with your list, and only promote offers that you think will genuinely help someone.

There are a lot of marketers I have liked, only to find them promoting some crap product that came out 5 years ago to their list. Now, old products can be good don't get me wrong, but it really amazes me what some big time marketers will promote.

The moral of the story is to treat your list well, and they will do the same for you!

Well, since you asked. About a year ago, I was doing my article marketing thing, submitting to the top article directories, like everyone else was doing and getting decent results. But not nearly the results commensurate with the tremendous effort I was putting forth. Then one day, I read an article titled, The Misunderstood Marketing Method. Suddenly, I realized why my article marketing results weren't nearly as successful as they could have been. All this time, I had been doing it all wrong.

I immediately switched gears, and the results were almost instantaneous. Now I'm at a stage in my career where I'm so busy, I'm actually turning clients away. It's amazing what having your articles published on respected, high-profile websites like SiteProNews can do for your career. Clients look at you in an entirely different light.

I'll keep this short, I had been trying to make money online for several years before finally sticking to one thing that really .. REALLY works .. domain flipping.

Of all the ways to make money online, it's the best, in my opinion, because it doesn't relay on seo, ppc, article marketing, cpa, or blogs.

And it's only going to get better in the years to come when we are able to register our own name as a TLD, like amazon.books!

Therein lies the problem. It took me nearly a YEAR to realize that sitting in front of my computer looking up keywords, exploring niches, writing articles and blogs was actually WORK.

I come from a blue collar background. I still own my home inspection company and have for six years. I go do an inspection (actual manual labor) and I get a check when I finish. Today I have 2 inspections so I'll make around $600. (that doesn't happen every day)

At the end of the day I feel pretty good, as though I DID something. However, there are days where I'll spend 5-8 hours online "working" but I'll bring in no money. On those days I feel blah. I LOVE IM and I will succeed. But the mental conditioning is where I fail.

    Damn.

As I was writing this...I think I just came up with an idea for a product.

Anyway, thanks for the post. It rings true. But the "lack of hard work" is the reason why so many newbies fail.

    Happy marketing.

    Peace,

    Shane
