You said free, so here are some sites to check out:

    webstarts.com, wix.com, webs.com, and weebly.com
I’ve seen weebly referenced a number of times, favorably, so might be worth checking out. Also, many web hosting services offer free website builders as part of their packages, such as Host Gator.

Just pick on of the popular content management systems on the internet - wordpress, drupal, vivo, cmsmadesimple.org,,,,,.

I might be wrong on this, but since your asking about Microsoft Frontpage, I'am guessing that you took some college classes on web development, or your thinking / asking about taking some classes on web development. If that is the case, there is a world of difference between what they teach you in school, and what people use in real life.

When I took my web development class in college, all they taked about was static HTML pages and not a single mention of content management systems. When I started building websites that are going to be updated on a regular basis, I soon realized that static pages are not the way to go.

I recommend that you get on some CMS review sites and read through your options. There is everything from free CMSs like word press, all the way to CMSs costing thousands of dollars.

I did you a disservice earlier, with my first reply. I gave you some free resources, but there are some very low-priced website builders that seem quite popular (and easy to use).

One I've been impressed by is WYSIWYG 7. Just go to wysiwygwebbuilder dot com, and take a look. (Don't know if they have an affiliate program or not.)
It sells for $39.95, with a 30-day free trial download.

Heck, I'm thinking about buying it myself, and I'm happy with what I already use.

I think NVU Web Authoring but I'd highly recommend you integrate your website with the wordpress content management, it's very flexible and user friendly.

It really depends whether you already know your way around HTML/CSS or not. NVU is a great little editor with WYSIWYG, but also powerful enough to do advanced things.

Apart from that I can second the wordpress recommendation. Easy to install (sometimes even a 1-click install with fantastico) and loads of free themes around you can use.

    The Pros still use Dreamweaver,
once you get over the learning curve you will
find it offers more options and easier to find
    a line of source code.

I still use the Macromedia Version.

You're behind the times with frontpage, it is now microsoft expression and as with all the paid editors you can download a 30 day free trial and compare it against dreamweaver.

I think expression is excellent it also has the ability to open php files and show you the lines which is great if you get any errors within a membership script.

Depending on how ethical you feel most of these free trails have cracks that allow you to make them work permanently rather than expire after 30 days.

Thanks for all the advise. I have been using frontpage for several years, mainly because it came loaded on my computer, and it was easy for me to understand. You know, WYSIWYG.

I'm going to check into Expression and see what it has to offer, but I'm also going to check into some of the others mentioned here.

      Thanks again

I converted all my Frontpage sites to Wordpress a few years back. I do have one regret. Wish I had done it sooner. Joomla is good Drupal a little tougher to use and understand but many many possibilities there.

If your looking for for a free editor ... NVU

I think I've been hiding under the same rock. I have been using Frontpage for years and never knew about Expression. For those that previously used Frontpage, how does it compare? Is it worth upgrading?

I have always found it much easier to put together my sites in Frontpage then send them off to a coder who recodes it into valid XHTML and CSS. This means I can easily bash out websites in half a day from start to finish.

Dreamweaver and Photoshop for creating themes and Wordpress as the CMS, would be my vote.

I am still a fan of Dreamweaver because I have a personal history with the product.

Many moons ago, I was running around with this company called Elemental Software that produced a product called Drumbeat. It was one of the first authoring environments that allowed a sort of WYSIWYG approach to database-driven ASP-based websites. Awesome stuff for the time... 1997-ish.

Anyway, I'd been acquainted with Michael Allen since the very early 90s, and after he sold out of Authorware to create Macromedia, I'd stayed in touch with him - in fact, I almost went to work for him at Allen Interactions when I was starting to shop around for an acquisition partner for my own web dev company.

When I bumped into him at the Internet World show in Chicago in 1998, he told me that Macromedia had been in talks with Peter Hirschberg to buy Elemental Software, which they did for like $24 million at the time.

Well the long and the short of it was that I ended up on the first pre-release beta testing team for Dreamweaver Ultradev 1.0, and was even quoted on the retail sales box in print for the product.

I've had a love affair with Macromedia for a very long time. Adobe, not so much.

Dreamweaver is good but cost alot..you can do a 30 day free trial. However, if you have a hosting firm....and cpanel access....go to files in CPANEL and click to the PATH you have to a page you want to edit. Then if it says HTML - click on the HTML editor at the top of the CPANEL file browser. Then edit...However wordpress is the best....

Dreamweaver is great for html sites because of it's WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) editor. Wordpress is great for creating web 2.0 properties. Not to mention, it's really easy to use.

Frontpage is pants and kind of reduntant now, I think.

I have both Kompozer and Dreamweaver (I used Kompozer before aquiring DW and still open it for quick edit jobs) and i can say that Kompozer is great for free

Stick with Gimp as an alternative to PS. You are using the best free one already IMO.

I use Komposer to build or edit static html pages. It is quite easy to use and it is free as well. Ans as Paleochora said gimp is a good free alternative to photoshop.
