List building vs. Straight Linking: case study

This is to illustrate a point, because I don't think enough people realize that you should understand why you do something, not just know what to do. Because of that, ignore the numbers used, and focus on the concept. Thanks!

For those always wondering if you should build a list or not, consider this. Say that you write 100 articles 2 times. The first 100 point to your landing page (which converts at 40%), and the second 100 point straight to a CB sales page (or review page, blog... you know what I mean).

Let's also say that each article bring in 10 visitors per day, and your product has a $20 commission.

Ready for the comparison? At the end of month one, your landing page has gotten 30,000 visitors and 12,000 of them have joined your list. Averaging $.75 per subscriber per month (which is conservative), you'll make $9,000.

But what about those straight links? They've also gotten 30,000 visitors, and at a 1% conversion rate you'll make $6000. For those who think that Clickbank sales pages convert higher... very rarely.

Even if the page converts at 3% ($18,000), you lose all that traffic. With a landing page, you build income. As your traffic tapers off, you still have the list to market to. Not so with straight linking. After 1 month, the person with the list makes more. So put up a landing page!

Disclaimer: Yes I know that not every article that you write will bring in 10 visitors a day(depending on backlinking, the keywords themselves, and the rotation of Saturn's moons), but it made the math easy. Plus, no matter what numbers you use, you will make more money after the first month with a list. So don't focus on the numbers, focus on the concept!

    Great break down!

Question - when you build your list/have someone go to your page first rather than the clickbank page what are the best steps?

    For example:

    1. Good content about the product/niche
    2. Good freebie report/software/e-course/whatever works offered for signing up to list
    3. As soon as they sign up to list - send the email thanking them and include a reminder about the product with link?
    4. Follow up emails rotate with good content (no selling or pitches) then some emails with product recommendations

That's a formula for doing well with your list as I've understood it.

Is this pretty accurate or what should be expanded/deleted?

    Thanks,
    Stacy

I focus on niches more than products, so I tend to send them to a landing page, give them something worth at least $10 for free to sign up, and then set my auto responder to give only great, free information every 3 days or so. Then, twice a month I just send a blast promoting whatever. A product, a CPA offer, whatever.

This makes it much easier for me, because I can set up my autoresponder way ahead without worrying about having everything in place.

PLUS - now you have the opportunity to further build your relationship, educate, and sell to your list over and over and over again!

How is this a case study?
I see assumptions in your statement.

Can you show us the results?

It's a hypothetical case study created from my own results. I won't give my sites, but I will share the niche/experience:

Acne product: 300 articles, 1.93% conversion rate on CB . Average of 6 sales daily. ($120)

Dog training niche: 300 articles, 43.4% landing page, 153 new subscribers daily (on average). So, at $1 per subscriber per month (which I get), I make more just from my new subscribers. ($153)

Just to drive the point home, it doesn't matter. You can sell to your list around 24 times a year (some say more). You can sell to someone you straight link once. So... the list will ALWAYS earn more. Make sense?

    That is so true

Not building a list from day 1 was my biggest mistake when I started this year

Better late than never I suppose!

So how would I go about creating a list in other than the make money online niche? Like say solar panels?

Yeah another great theory, but theories won`t make me rich. Honestly try to write 100 articles which brings 1000 visitors daily. If it would be that simple I would create 10 authority websites with only 1000 articles on them, then I would get 10K visitors daily with 1 visitor per article and 100K !!! visitors daily with 10 visitors per article. What do you think how much money would you earn with 3 Million visitors monthly?

( I have some excellent and very cheap writers, I can easily create a big website for a few thousand bucks..)

If you really want to help out some newbys, then why don`t you explain your money making method in detail? This forum is loaded with posts like this, which leads you nowhere and gives you general infos and nothing specific. I used to read mindblowing posts here ages ago, but now...

Totally agree - if you don't build the list then you MIGHT make the sale once, but with the list, even if you don't make the sale there and then you can promote something else next month, and something else the month after!

    @Sean

Agree entirely on the list building element , although I'm
presuming you're making ROI assumptions in your post
as opposed to known metrics from a split test?
