Niche blogging / Microblogging much much quicker and simpler

As an owner of a fair few niche blogs I am always on the lookout for plugins, apps, etc that will make my life simpler. My aim with my blogs has always been to have them run as close to 100% automated as possible. That way I do the work once, then put my feet up and watch the moolah roll in. Well that's the theory anyway, and it seems to work with moderate success.

Recently I have been experimenting with the new Wordpress 3. It now has Wordpress MultiUser built in, as any Wordpress user will probably know. What amazes me is that people are not rushing to embrace it. With the new Wordpress you can now run all your blogs from a single installation. Each blog can still have its own top-level domain, page rank etc. Google sees them as their own domain. But the great thing is that you can manage them all from a single installation.

There's a good tutorial here:

Has anyone else tried Wordpress 3 MU? What do you think of it?

If you haven't upgraded and started using it, why not?

Does anyone have any reasons for not using Worpdress 3 MU?

Think I'll wait 'til about 3.03 or 3.04, at least. The WP team has a tendency to do things like MicroSoft and allow the user community to find bugs for them.

Exactly. Free software means the first public release IS the real Beta. I usually hold out at least until my favorite plugins catch up in compatibility. By that point, it's all shook out more or less.

I AM excited about the possibilities, but will have to wait to check them out. And sadly, I don't have the leisure time to check out stuff that I can't use yet.

Fair warning: It's possible I'm arguing with you because I have nothing better to do.

Is there a way to manage multiple blogs that are installed on multiple different servers?

That would be too good if it was possible.

Nothing off the shelf; not that I know of. You'd have to have a custom solution programmed. That's being on different servers. When you're dealing with multiple hosting environments, things tend to get a little dicey.

Since the whole cBlock thing isn't as important as it used to be; (as long as you're white/gray hat); it would make more sense to do a dedicated with multiple IPs. That would make the custom solution easier to manage/code, as well.

But, then again... that's the whole premise behind MU; if I'm not mistaken. :p

I am into making my own blog networks. Management is time consuming and pretty much every software I have tried to make it easier has its flaws.

Would really love to find an effective software for managing and updating multiple wordpress blogs on multiple different hosting packages.

Well, really kinna depends on what you consider "managing"; as BigMike has an app that allows you to post to multiple blogs from one location.

There's another app called BlogJet that allows for the same thing. As a matter of fact, there's more than a few blog editors that now have the multiple blog posting feature.

If you're referring to things like database upkeep, plug-in updates, page creation, SPAM control... etc.; then yeah, you're gonna have to pay a pretty penny for a custom built solution.

I have tried a few high ticket scripts and all were not very good.

I want to be able to update and install wordpress, plugins and manage content.

            ** EDIT **

WP manager DX is only script that seems to work but has its limitations and quirks.

I'm a little clogged up with my own projects, right now. But, what you're talking about is something I've been working on... so, as long as you're not the type to try and get free programming; (no offense); shoot me a PM and we can see what we can work out.

('bout the best I can do ya; fellow Warrior and all; is $25hr USD)

Might even turn out to be a product.

I will first test the WP upgrade on my test domains before upgrading WP for my production websites which bring me steady income. I had a bad experience before because of incompatibility of plugins which take their own time to upgrade.

I thought I'd provide a brief update on my trials of Wordpress MU and the tutorial in the link above.

I didnt want to leave the impression that this was easy. Its not!

After spending a fair amount of time trying to get a good working Wordpress MU installation working, across different domains, I have stopped. Yes, it is possible, but there are problems.

If on the other hand you want Wordpress MU on subdomains or directories of the same domain then it is straightforward.
