When you were a newbie...

Hi guys,

I am still sorta new to making money online. I keep studying and learning more about how this business works.

I have had many lightbulb moments -- where everything just clicked.

A lot of these moments though came after sleepless nights and hours glued to my computer screen feeling my eyes slowly going crosses.

I really wish someone had been able to tell me some of these things early on.

For example how important it is to create a list. That could have saved me a year of time, at least.

So what were some of the things you have learned the hard way that you wished someone had told you when you were just getting started?

I've tried many ways to make money before finding out about domain flipping. Actually, I've always known about it for a long time but never really took it seriously.

But now, it's like a goldmine, specially with the right information, resources and tools.

This all depends on your skill set.

When I was new online, the whole idea of being online was new. Less than 20 million people, as opposed to the 1.8 billion who are online today. There just weren't that many people to learn the business from.

So, I did what I knew how to do: Write and sell. I'd been the moderator for a number of BBS's for 8 years prior to that, so I created an email discussion list for small business owners. And I haunted every other email list worth reading at the time.

I found a model that fit my existing skills and preferences and went with it. I networked every day, and got to know a lot of people.

It's not that hard. You do what you're good at, or what you'd enjoy becoming good at.

One of the best thing that you can do that will save you a lot of time and money in the long is to hire a mentor. You will have a blue print to work on but more importantly you will have to take action based on the assignments given to you.

I am an intermediate in a way - I am an advanced SEO, advanced article writer and bad seller - I don't know where to place it :-)

I had learnt SEO the easy way, and article writing too. In a way, I never learnt them - they just happened. Because of my Computer Science background and deep knowleddge, and flair towards literature, they just happened.

Thanks to my SEO skills, I am on the first page for a number of terms, including #1's.

So is it all roses for me? No way, far from it.

I'm a bad seller, and I personally want to take the marketing (selling etc) to be my main work online. I anyway make enough in my day job (I work part time in IM still), and I do IM for the fun of it also.

How bad am I at selling? For example, I was checking the stats of one of my sites less than 5 minutes back - still trying to work how can I sell the product there as an affiliate.

How many visitors did I get yesterday? 180 humans - and yeah, 1000+ in the last 7 days. How many sales did I make for it in the last 7 days? 0 - zero - nada. Does this thing sell? You bet - it is a hot cake under the female health umbrella (don't want to give away the niche) - and yes, that keyword is the main keyword with tons of daily searches. And final question - how am I getting these visitors? Well, I'm #6 for this one in Google and the top-4 at the Wikipeddias and something.gov etc - only 1 "commercial" site ahead of me. Why am I not in top-3 or something? If I am not selling something which good marketers would probably sell 2-3 pieces per 100 visitors, what is my motivation to invest more and rank higher? Any good marketer would make $100 out of it for 180 visitors from Google first page - they are laser targeted.

So, I'm still learning how to sell - in a very hard way -- and yet I'm not a newbie.

          Hey Fred
Not sure what your trying to sell so I can't be to precise, but I've found that if your selling something to a woman (health niche) you need to be a woman (or at least appear to be).

Age, appearance (pic),, story.. It all counts. I'm getting a tiny 10-30 visits per day to a tiny niche (health) site and I make 4 -5 sales a week (affiliate).

If you want a second opinion I'll happily take a look (understand if you don't).

          Cheers
          Mark

Sure, why not !! Let me send you a PM. I'd be delighted.

Interestingly, since my last post, I've made a sell on it finally after 8-9 long days. And again, today (which is less than the last 24 hours), going by Google analytics, I've had 143 visitors including 138 uniques, with 137 being Google search visitors out of this.

So, let me send you a PM :-)

I think the biggest step is to stop looking for the "perfect" method for you and start applying what you've learned. It's easy to get swept up by the idea of purchasing program after program. You'll never get started if you keep looking for the "right" way to make IM work.

I struggled for nearly a year working online before I decided one day to focus on one thing. I started blogging and learned everything I could about it and then moved to social marketing and focussed fully on that. I now apply this knowledge to my blogging business but more lucratively to offline clients who desperately need my knowledge to help their business to survive.

So my advice would be to pick an area you are interested in first and learn everything about it to the exclusion of all other distractions so you become an expert. Then sell your skills offline!

I wish I knew about the importance of traffic and how to generate traffic. There were so many systems that I had to pass up or half finish because I had no clue about traffic. I thought all it took was setting up the site and all the "marketing" elements and wait for the magic to happen.

    So much time lost =/

      Here's what I learned:

Fail as Fast as Possible ~Kim Roach

Or in other words, take action and don't keep thinking about failing. Now if fail, you should do so as fast as possible so that you can move on to something else and if you succeed then you don't have to do anything (unless you don't want to succeed )

When I begin my online marketing career I was unaware of the power of backlinks itself. I started it with a blog which just cover my my personal mattress which are interested to me only. Then I understood this will not provide any success. So I shifted to some news blog. Then I learned there are something like directories which can provide traffic to my website. I started adding my URL in directories. Then I learned the power of social networking sites and book marking... gradually I learned the game.

For me, chasing too many things at once was the biggest problem. You must get good at one thing at a time in my mind. I always had my fingers in too many programs and systems. Pick one and get good at it. Then, try more if you want.

I was always told to pick 1 thing and stick to it.
    I somewhat disagree,
Although I needed to finish what I started
You must keep learning as everything changes.
You blink your eyes and up comes Facebook, Twitter etc.
Never assume you have finally learned it all.

In order to be successful with your online business/ Internet marketing you should know what's your target. From there, you should have set goals. Make priorities and make sure you do something. Time to time you will learn something, so just gather resources and apply what you have learned. Yes, you may want to have a mentor to guide you through it all. But make sure you are learning from it so you would be successful. Take note and implement. The key to success is that you have that determination to get something DONE!

I chose to quit my day job, and throw myself fully into internet marketing. It cost me a car, an apartment, and a social life. I spent the next seven months scrambling to do any freelance job I could scrounge to pay the bills.

I suppose the one thing that I wished someone to tell me was the value of taking the long view. I became so focused on just looking for the next payment to paypal, that I neglected my education and laying the foundation for a more stable income.

So many products promise that instant payday, that huge score in only a few weeks. Rarely does this happen, and not without a lot of hard work and planning. No one ever wants to hear about the struggle, only the golden ring at the end of the road.

Then again, talking about struggle doesn't make a sexy sales letter does it.
