I just learned to NEVER assume it's too late to jump on something

First, I'm new to internet marketing and haven't made any money yet, so I'm hardly an authority on anything related to IM. I'm working on my second affiliate site doing the usual SEO work to get a good Google ranking. What I wanted to post about quickly is something that I just experienced that I think can help a lot of people, especially those like me who are trying to break in to IM.

A few weeks ago, one of the several IM newsletters I subscribe to gave a tip for a keyword phrase that got thousands of monthly global searches but had little competition (and pretty weak at that). I could tell from some of the other content in the email that it was written at least a year or two ago. Since this was from a "name" marketer, I figured, well, no doubt a ton of people have already attacked the hell out of that keyword, so it's not low competition anymore.

Two days ago I started thinking about it and decided to check the number of searches with the Google keyword tool. Over 18,000 global searches per month. Then I checked Google and was shocked at the low number of pages and their quality. The page 1 sites had garbage PR rankings, few or no backlinks and many were just message board posts or articles from minor directories. I checked Godaddy and a TLD featuring the keyword phrase was available, so I scooped it up, threw up a quickie page using a nice free Wordpress theme and figured I'd get to work on adding content, SEO and monetizing once I was finished with my current projects. Just for the heck of it, I just did a Google search and was floored to discover that I'm already on page 2! This is just two days later with no backlinks, no articles and no SEO of any kind. Just one simple page that I pinged and that's it. Getting to page one will be easier than I thought!

My point is this. Sometimes, we get advice on niches, markets or keywords that are lucrative but virtually untapped and we assume that because it's posted on a public message board or blasted to thousands of email subscribers, by the time you take action, hundreds or thousands of others have beaten you to the punch. Don't do that. Consider that if you're thinking that way, then others might be thinking the same, so be the action taker and go for it!

1 am in a similar situation. I cam across a keyword phrase that is apparently getting 4000 searches a month. This might be considered low but for the same reasons you give I am thinking of giving it a try.

With software like Microniche finder you wonder how long it will be before every niche gets saturated.

Anyway, since I can use the keyword phrase in the URL,Title, and Headline etc I should be able to get the phrase on the first page of Google quite quickly by just adapting a ready made template. Even if the site does not perfectly match what the searcher is looking for at the beginning, it should look to Google as if it does.

There are keywords to be found with little competition. I found one such keyword that ranks my site No. 1 on Google although the keyword is not in the title or url and just appears in the text on the page. Only when a lot of Slate Miners Cottages start being advertised will I have to worry about keeping the #1 spot.

...yes, but the niche could be saturated with crap, and you'd still have a great opportunity to excel if you produce quality content, with consideration to SEO/LSI. Very few of my articles are less than 1,000 Words long, and they are trafficked quite frequently...

People can say all they want about the length of articles, however, 1,000+ words works very well for me.

Advices are great! But once we get them, we should always validate the veracity of that piece of information just like what you did.

I mean, who would have thought that it would work out well with you.

I couldn't agree more I used to make the mistake of thinking of IM as a 'race', especially in terms of ranking sites and such. Yes, every single hour of every day, people are finding profitable keywords and are climbing up rankings and are claiming great domain names, but I strongly believe there is always going to be enough of everything IM related to go around, especially money.

I learned through experience and observation that effort, quality and consistency are extremely important. I have actually taken a break from IM in the last couple of months, but at no time have I thought that I can't come back and do even better than before. I feel I can apply the same principals that have brought me great results before to new projects, and I'll again achieve great results

In terms of SEO/keywords, it really is amazing how much 'gold' is still out there. Before my IM break, I got into domain name flipping and with a fairly small amount of effort found some extremely good names. Like you say Chris, there are so many keywords that are neglected too - every single niche has them, whether it's weight loss, dating, IM or anything at all. Every second of every day, people are online looking for information, solutions to problems and products. It's our job to get in front of them and give them what they want, and in turn improve their lives

Good post. I have probably talked myself out of many good opportunities just from my own faulty reasoning. Nothing beats reasearch AND experimentation.

Thanks for sharing your experience Chris.

This is something that many newbies don't realise and part of the reason they jump from one thing to the next - if you just do the right things and take persistent action, there's no reason for anyone not to be able to make money in most niches.

One of the main reasons many internet marketers don't make as much money as they could is that they simply don't take enough action.

And one of the great things about internet marketing is that because so few people take serious action if you're one of the few who do then opportunities are wide open for you.

      Kindest regards,

One of the great things about IM is that every niche can never get saturated because new niches are created all the time. Twilight, iPod, digital cameras, smart phones, **** berries. These are things that didn't always exist or weren't always well known and soon enough there'll be another movie, tech gadget or health fad to monetize.

Thank you, that's exactly what I wanted to say. A race! I always worried that I entered the race too late to win, but that's not the case. If anything with so many people jumping into offline marketing, it might even give those of us sticking to strictly online ventures some more elbow room.
