Fairly big company wants a sponsored ad on my new blog! need your advice.

I need some help form veteran bloggers and anyone who makes money with sponsored ads.

I just received this email from a fairly big website which offers free consumer information and reviews in a variety of categories, like identity theft protection and etc. This is my first experience with this kinds of sponsored ads "opportunity" if you will. What do you think I should do? If it comes down charging them a monthly fee to place an ad on my home page, what would be a fair price? Should I even consider that at this point?...

I think their service is somehow related to my niche, but what do you guys think? Do you think their service is relevant to my topic in any way that would make it ok to mention it on my blog (either in a post or as an ad)?

This blog of mine is about paid surveys, freelancing and online money making in general. Its about 10 months or so old, and gets about 200 UV (give or take a few) a day, most of them from SEs.

Here is part of the email I received, that is the reason for opening this thread:
...I'd love to get you to link to our site— I think it would be relevant and
informative for your visitors. We're most interested in one-way linking
opportunities and we're definitely open to sponsorships or any other way to
make that happen...

I would appreciate any advice and help. Thank you.

P.S.
I realize it might not be that big of a deal. But its the first time I
have received this kind of request, so I want to learn the proper way
to respond and handle it. So please keep your bashings to yourself.
Thank you

  • Well there is a big difference between someone wanting to exchange links or pay for a single blog post and someone interested in purchasing banner advertising from you.

Typically companies or individuals who are interested in paying a lot of money for advertising space are looking for sites slightly more developed and they are going to pay particular attention to how many unique visitors you have. If your averaging say 200 visitors a day lets say that is 300 page views per day extrapolated across a month and thats only about 9000 pageview's/impressions a month.

Any chance you have a forum on your website? If so, is it used often?

It sounds similar to an email a friend of mine received that turned out to be scam-like. They wanted him to provide a one way link to their site for free and nothing reciprocal at all.

I doubt it, it's more likely an affiliate who's looking to pay for a review on his website. I have several blogs and regularily get people contacting me and seeing if I would be interested in either getting free samples of their product or money in exchange for a post/review.

Generally depending on your websites reach/ pagerank value your looking anywhere between $30-50 per blog post.

it's great opportunity to promote your site, it may be the first step to get more ads. you should grab the opportunity and learn on how to respond going forward with the same request in the future.

Yeah, great job! You should definitely consider charging them monthly at this point.. also commission when someone subscribe or sign up for the service. Go slow and be careful with the transaction and such.. Good luck!

Thanks for the reply. Those are the exact points I was making to myself. Thats why I wanted some ideas and advice. the person who write the email interdeuced herself as the editor of the website and write it in first person. So, to me it didn't sound like just a link exchange kind of thing. I could be wrong tHough.

Well, I actually get a lot of those scam emails as well, but this seems totally legitimate. The senders email, the website and what it claims to be and in general the whole email seems muh more legitimate than those scams. Again I could be wrong. Thanks for the heads up anyway.

Well, I dont know about "a major company", but either way its a good feeling. thank you for your word of encouragement.
The "major compney" reminded me of the Christmas movie "... its a major award" :p
