Harvesting Bots - Send Them Packing

Another thread just reminded me of the harvesting robots that roam freely across the web. I have now found and use a free service (I do like free!) that is called "Spam Poison".

I have now put it on my new forum (only six weeks old so no great amount of members emails to harvest yet!) - and the piece of code you use is universal:-

" <a href="http://english-196178920117.spampoison.com"><img src="http://pics5.inxhost.com/images/sticker.gif" border="0" width="80" height="15"/></a> "

Just copy and paste that at the bottom of your forum or blog or other site where you will find a logo appears in red-black saying Spam Poison.

What this does is given on Spam Poison's website and I quote:-

"These links will redirect email harvesting bots to trap sites that will feed it with an almost infinite loop of dynamically generated fake email addresses, mostly on known spammer owned domains! This will render their harvested lists practically useless and of no commercial value. "

Enjoy!

That's pretty neat - but what about the domain spampoison.com? Surely the'll just update their bots to exclude the domain?

What would be cool is an index.php script you can put on your own site in a special folder then just direct them to that folder, and give them the runaround.

I don't think the idiots running bots even know about Spam Poison so they would not exclude it. The Spam Poison people have been around for seven years giving these bots the run-around!
