how much web design affect our affiliate marketing/online business success?

Hi, I'm no good (right now) in designing website or any minisite that I'm promoting a product .

I wonder how much is it for website design to affect our online business?

(sometime I think it doesn't really matter, but more to content, that's why I mostly leave my website plain or poor design... and I haven't got much success with it.)

Well more than the website design, its the images on the website which make a greater impact. You can have a simple Wordpress blog but with the right set of images you can make a difference between a profit and a loss.

Visitors to your website, that are not there because they know you and are looking for the information you provide, will decide if they stay or leave in the first few seconds.

In those few seconds they will not be reading the content (maybe one headline) but browsing and getting the "feel" of the site.

It does not have to be stunningly beautiful but it must be pleasing to the eye and inviting.

When I was in graphic design school, someone told me that if you don't know how to use fonts, then don't. I took it to heart and quit graphic design school.

If the content is good, the design matters less. If you're not a good designer, focus on clarity and ease of use/reading. That's easy to do by being minimalist.

Besides, very few designers I've worked with understand that the design is supposed to get out of the way of consuming the content anyway.

Look at it this way, with good content, you can earn the money to get a good designer. With a good design and no content, you can't earn anything (unless you sell designs).

Fair warning: It's possible I'm arguing with you because I have nothing better to do.

indeed, just have a nice, simple, and clean layout, so there's no distraction, and the viewer knows where they are suppose to be looking at

Many newbies concentrate too much on graphics, headers, etc.

The single most important thing is the offer.. followed by your copy. If your website overpowers any of these, then you have a problem.

I've built plenty of websites that kicked butt, and yet they were pretty darn ugly compared to the competition.

I learned that "pretty sites only sell pretty sites (ie, they sell the services of the person who made it) - they don't sell product".
