How To Resolve or Minimize The Impact of Digital Piracy...

There's a great thread going on where folks are debating the various aspects of digital piracy. I think the thread is quite interesting, but personally I'd like to see a thread focused on solutions or ways to minimize the impact of digital piracy for all of us who sell information products or publish in a digital medium.

Here is one quote from the thread...

Content Licensing
Whereas any initial eBooks that you release that contain mission critical data, it is required for the User to be online and utilize log in credentials to access said content.

By forcing individuals to log in, you can track IP addresses and therefore flag multiple IP address accesses. Once flagged, how you handle various scenarios is up to your individual business model.

Should the User wish to be able to access said content without this security measure, they should be instructed to purchase a unlimited access license. Pricing of such licenses would be determined by your own individual business model.

Unlimited Access Licenses should employ a silent "periodic call home feature"; which would thwart the sharing of licensed content.

The technology for this methodology is readily available in inexpensive formats. The only expense one might need to endure is the expense of a developer qualified to deftly insert this technology into your current business model without inconveniencing your Customers. There is no reason this methodology needs to get in the way of your sales.

There was another post by Colin in the thread that made a great point. To summarize Colin's point...

We the actual creators of the product are the ones who should be the real value or selling point. Everything we do and create should help to reinforce "our" value. The more our products rock the more we rock, etc.

I have a bit more to say, but were going to start lighting some fireworks shortly and I need to get another rum and coke. I'll post again later...

Much love & Happy 4th all.
