How much do you pay your offline consulting salespeople?

Those of you that do this, how much do you pay your salespeople?

I was thinking that around 30% on the up-front sales is fair. Should they be getting a cut of the recurring fees as well do you think?

I feel like it's tough for me to judge because I want to be there to speak with the owners when they initially try to sell them on the idea, but in that case I'm doing just as much work as my salespeople, sometimes more.

Any advice you guys have on what you do would help me guide my business a bit. I'd appreciate it!

Thanks!

Maybe look into paying them "per lead"....that way you can still be the closer & control the deal. It would be easier on them also. Maybe something like...if X amount of leads turn into sales...they get a bonus (as an incentive)

    Just a thought...

Congrat's on starting your offline business...much success!

Yeah that's definitely a good idea. I might do that. My sales guy is a close friend who used to sell cars with me, so his sales skills are definitely up to par. He can sell anything to anybody if he knows the value in the product and can build value accordingly.

I would hate to feel like I wasn't paying him enough. In all the businesses I've run, I've found that taking care of my employees financially has brought much more in profits and revenue in and reaped huge benefits when I needed that extra mile from them in hard times too.

I guess I could give him like $100 a lead, and then do a graduated pay scale for each amount of leads over 2 that turn into sales every month. So the third could be a $300 bonus, fourth $400, fifth $500, then maybe a 30% bonus of each sales over 5. This would allow me to get 10 leads for $1,000 and one sale on SEO services nets me about $2,000, so I'd be up on the first sale, plus the recurring I get monthly from each client that pays the retainer. And if I so happened to make 5 sales, I wouldn't feel bad paying the guy $2k to $3k because I'd be netting a good amount.

I guess there's a lot of ways to go about this. I'd love to hear more recommendations from others on it.

  • One of my clients has sales people that don't receive commission unless they make a minimum of $1,000 in sales FIRST each month.

She pays them the commission on that money of course, but they have to make sure they bring in more than that amount in customer sales before the commission structure kicks in.

I thought it was a good way to make sure that the sales team always started the month with a high level of enthusiasm to do well!
