This forum will not make you a single penny

It's true. Being on this forum will not make you a single penny, never mind a dollar or thousands of dollars. It's a misconception that so many of us (including me) have.

What I mean by all of this is that endless trawling of this forum is not in itself productive. I do it too much and I suspect I'm not alone. I often think that I'll do some 'money making' work and somewhere along the way I end up on the forum. Before I know it I've spent quite a lot of time here and in reality I've done nothing useful. Sometimes I think being on here is an avoidance technique which many use to rationalise not taking direct action towards building our businesses. We use it to be around the business but not actually in the business

As I say this forum will not make you a single penny if you simply drift around it with no specific intention.

Where this forum will bring you money is if you take one of the myriad of advice pieces and actually deploy it. The world does not pay you for what you know, it pays you for you do with what you know.

But if like me this translation into action gets to be the hard part I'm going to give you some advice from a millionaire who was flat broke who at times had to sleep in public bathroom in San Francisco. The guy is called Chris Gardner who was made famous as the subject of the movie The Pursuit of Happyness.

I came across and old article while clearing out some papers which gave me renewed faith and found me some advice I'm going to share with you.

Often warriors give sound piece of advice about taking massive action. It's sound advice but if you're like me you're just not wired up to do it - yet! In fact for many the thoughts that often occur when you see the phrase massive action is to simply stay where you are. In effect you freeze (or you go and buy another WSO).

So if you find yourself in this situation I'm going to share with you the advice that Gardner gives. I also want you to take heart from it because he is now a multimillionaire and he advocates it.

Baby steps count

That's it. You don't need to take massive action all in one go. If you think about it differently and break donw your work into a series of baby steps that you can consistently deliver on you will ultimately have taken massive action at a level you can cope with. This is very important that you break it down to a level that you can remain motivated to deliver on. Yes you will go a lot slower than the $1000 overnight type products but if you already own a stack of those and they haven't got you anywhere then maybe it's time to admit you need to think again about how you're going to get there.

I once saw this advicee given the analogy of moving a super tanker. The tanker may only move 1 or 2 degrees from it's original course but 20 or 30 miles later it will be in a very different place that had it remained on it's original bearing.

So go on, shut down the forum and break one of your existing projects into baby steps that you can cope with so that they are almost invisible and implement each one a step at a time and keep on going.

Good luck

Andrew

Very powerful conversation there Andrew and what a 'ah ha' moment.

Unfortunately many people get stuck in this rut and its understandable but it explains why only a small percentage of people ultimately become successful at what they are up to and the rest are like hamsters on a wheel running in circles.

Is it a way people sabotage themselves to keep them from having the level of success they want and deserve? Quite possibly. Why??? Well, this is the conundrum. Everyone is different and why they CHOOSE not to be successful is different for everyone.

I did say choose, because it is a choice. Many people may not agree with this, but when you do hear of stories such as that of Christopher Gardner, you realize that if you have the passion, the desire to learn and more importantly the courage to take action, than you can accomplish big things in life. And not only take action but continue to tweak things and see what what works and what doesn't.

But yes, it's about taking that first step, baby steps as you put it so well. So thank you for sharing this, because although I'm a big advocate of baby steps and always tell others the same it's always great to be reminded for myself as well.

Good luck on your online venture...I am sure I'll be hearing about the great things you are up to.

And if you every feel like you are falling back in that old way of being, think of this amazing quote from that movie - "you have a dream you have to protect it...you want something, go get it, PERIOD!"

Thanks for the post - and is it wasting time if you look on this board 'after hours'? I am not looking to make money from here - but its nice to be around people that share a common interest.

I started a meetup.com group in my local area for the same reason. Sure it may not make a million clients per year, but I didn't do it for the money.

Like most things in life - you get what you take. So far on the 2 days I have been here I have seen some really interesting and (such as in this thread's case) very positive enlightenment.

I hope to learn alot from being here and I hope I can help impart some knowledge into the community of my own.

Thanks to the OP for the post - Happy Hunting!

      Awesome advice.

So many people starting out want to be the next Google or are already planning out their millions before they've made a buck. You have to take the baby steps to get started. More over understand the 'how's' and 'whys' you made a sale in the first place.

I got a PM a couple months ago from someone who literally said "Sorry, but I just noticed you were online right now and I need someone to make me an ebook cover within the next half hour... can you do that?"

And when I said "sure," he paid in advance.

So, um, I'd say you're wrong.

I suppose you could argue some subtlety and say it wasn't JUST being on the forum, but it's not like I have some reputation for being a graphics guy. I'm not a graphics guy. I'm just the guy that happened to be online.

Forums are a place of people's opinions - give yours if you wish to help others and be helped but don't live and die by forums. If you get too caught up in it - especially the negative stuff it can do more harm than good.

I use them sparingly but they can be useful when you want to gauge opinion on something. I prefer to give advice to people I feel I can help.

What will make money is the number of payment buttons you have and how much they are promoted!

Here I am, two years later, and not a single project under my belt (that's shameful to admit). This week has been my resurgence of drive, and I'm currently EXECUTING projects and making things happen.

Newbies: follow the advice in the original post, trust me. Don't be like me and spend two years screwing around!

Well said, it's not the forum that'll make you money but how you take action from all its content, expert and proven advices and look back from what you've started, rinse it and repeat the processes. This is a forum full of thoughts in different angles, full of resources that may or may not work for you, etc. so without taking action all at once having that unique idea in mind, you might get stuck in being confused with information overload.

While it's true in the context of what you've said, this forum can spark some life-long connections and that can be very valuable. So, not directly, but indirectly WF can make you money.

But again, you got to take action. You got to take the initiative and spark those connections, etc. So, with all that said, great post Andrew!
