How Do I research Long Tail keywords?

I know how to research keywords, or at least I think I do. I use a combination of adwords, nichebot classic and seobook.

the long tail keywords though, would they be listed in those tools?

for ex

wedding stationary would be the keyword

now to make this into a long tail, I would add other phrases to it like wedding stationary for a winter wedding

I get no results, does that mean that noones looking for that.

Should I be making up my own long tails or use the ones that the tools give me. I ask becasue when I make up my own, I never get results- just "not enough data"

Try the Google adwords tool (it's free)...
    https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal

Also I'm pretty sure "wedding stationary" is spelled with an e "wedding stationery".

    But I could be wrong.

If you go to the google tool above and type in wedding you'll see a whole pile of long tail keywords and related keywords.

You can also focus on one of those long tail keywords and repeat the process to get even longer tail keyword phrases.

I hope that helps to answer your question.

      As an example:

If you did the search for "wedding"

you would have found the keyword phrase "wedding invitations" with over 600,000 searches a month.

Then if you searched for "wedding invitations" you would have found these keyword phrases:

      wedding reception invitations
      contemporary wedding invitations
      modern wedding invitations
      unique wedding invitations
      beach wedding invitations
      etc etc

Some of these are still getting huge traffic and are probably VERY competitive so you might drill down even further perhaps with
      "wedding reception invitations"

And then you'll find some keyword phrases that you should be able to compete for when you're starting out:

      beach wedding reception invitations
      sample wedding reception invitations
      wedding reception invitations etiquette
      themed wedding reception invitations
      wedding reception party invitations

You won't get a pile of traffic from search terms like this but:

      # 1: You probably only need to put one page on your site with content dedicated to a really long tail keyword phrase like these and you should rank high on Google with just one good backlink from a related site.

      # 2: The visitors you get will be highly targeted and far more likely to buy something from you especially if you choose long tail keyword phrases that suggest someone is looking to buy something you have to sell.

      # 3: Every little bit of traffic adds up. If you have 500 pages getting just 1 highly targeted visitors a day each that adds up to 500 highly targeted visitors a day.

      # 4: Over time Google will start seeing your site as a resource and it will get easier for you to target shorter keyword phrases with more traffic and get high rankings on Google for them...especially if you're linking to those pages with the pages that have your longer tail keyword phrases.

I think you just answered your own question.

If you never get results when you make your own up, then use the ones that the tools give you. If you're not getting results when you query the tools, then maybe no one searches for those keywords.

Oh..Now I think I get it. Take the results and then submit the results into the adwords tool to refine and get a long tail.

    Thanks guys!

I read somewhere that Google admits that around 50% of the search terms typed in are unique phrases. I can't varify that, but I can look at my own statistics.

For one of my websites, looking at the last six months of keywords used to find the site, I had to look through almost 1,000 keyphrases before I got to where the keyphrases were unique. Then the next 3,000 keyphrases only had one incident each.

So that site has 75% unique keyphrases in those stats.

Could I have found all those using a keyword tool? How about if I tried thinking them all up? My guess is NO for both.

And here is something else for you to ponder...One of those 3,000 LTKPs was simply an LSI (latent symantic indexing) keyphrase.

I did not have the phrase anywhere on the site, and I certainly didn't optimize for it. But Google ranked me #1 for it.

That unique four word LSI phrase brought in over $5,000 in sales. $2,100 on the first sale with a reorder of another $3,200 a few months later. That customer will be reordering again around January.

I would suggest that unless you are doing research for a PPC campaign only, you also focus on creating content that allows for your site to clearly understood by the search engines so they know what it is your site is about.

If you are not familiar with LSI I would also suggest you read up on it so you understand its power. As the search engines get more sophisticated, their algorithms will tend to define your content more than just by keywords. It will be the keywords in context that make a difference.

    Ask me how I know
