Opinion - should I do a 301 redirect just to get my keyword in the domain?

Hi all, I'm just looking for opinions - my domain does not currently have my main targeted keyword in it.

I have about 55 backlinks to my main domain and a small smattering of backlinks to some inner pages.

I did find a good domain www dot mykeywordsales dot com and am considering going through a 301 redirect in order to gain the SEO value of a keyword in my domain. I will be targeting other secondary keywords as well and hope to rank but for right now just working on my main keyword.

So - warriors - what would you do?

Is it worth the effort? or should I be able to see good rankings based on all other seo aspects as well?

thanks
Christine

  • So you want to move your site to the new domain using 301 thats fine.

If you think that just registering a new domain, then pointing that domain using a 301 to your existing domain would benefit you SEO wise, you are probably wasting your time.

Google won't assign value to a domain just because it's redirected keyword or not.

IQ is right. Grab the domain, then move everything over to the new domain.

Ok, I was thinking a redirect so I could do 2 things:
    1) Keep my backlinks which point to the old domain
    2) Up my SEO by having a new domain with the kw

But sounds like my strategy is not a good one...

    So, a new question then:
by grabbing the new domain and moving my site onto it - I'm going to lose my backlinking to date.
Is the work of getting that many backlinks again worth this domain with the keyword from an SEO pespective?
I'm happy with my current domain, it just doesn't have the KW. So, I'm wondering how much value google places on the KW in the domain.

I had *thought* perhaps, not as much post mayday - but obviously, I don't know..

    Thanks,

No, that's what the 301 redirect is for. You keep the old domain and the new and simply redirect the old to the new. So, all the backlinks remain your backlinks so long as you keep that old domain name.

Dan's content is irregularly read by handfuls of people. Join the elite few by reading his blog: dcrBlogs.com, following him on Twitter: dcrTweets.com or reading his fiction: dcrWrites.com but NOT by Clicking Here!

Dan also writes content for hire, but you can't afford him anyway.

    Seriously, i wouldnt bother

Why not just add a blog and put your keyword in a blog post so its like

    blogurl.com/keyword-title

It makes ranking quicker if you have the exact keyword.com but you can rank with a domain without the keyword in it.
