Any alternatives to paypal?

Sorry for the strong language in the title but the weight I have on my chest is huge.

So here's the story:

About a week ago, Paypal limited my account because they were suspecting some "unusual activity" and wanted me to confirm my bank account, SSN etc and so I did.

After a day my account was restored. Good right?

Two days later, they limited my account again. I then went through the whole process again and after a day my account was restored.

I then called them and told them that it were me using the account and there is no "unusual activity" going on. When they asked me why was I getting "more than usual" funds in my account I told them that I just launched a new website and it's that's the reason.

In the end, they said they were sorry for the inconvenience but security is their first priority.

Well, whatever I was happy to get my account back.

Today, About 5 minutes ago I logged into my account and I saw that cursed "Your account access has been limited notification"

I am sick and tired of this and I am in a dire need of an alternative.

Any help

Something like that happen to me a couple of months ago.

PayPal (and clickbank) is starting to change up their policies.
I don't know why Clickbank is doing it but Paypal is because of
    increasing in fraudulent activity.

They explained to me that when you have an account that is $300
then "all of sudden" its $10,000, it raises a red flag (which is stupid
    in my mind)

I suggest that you talk to a higher up in account management for PayPal
and explain to them that you are a marketer that can bring in cash fast.

It shouldn't be like that though, they let ebay guys off the hook but
not internet marketers (even though they own ebay)

Well actually, it's the other way around

Ebay owns Paypal so there's nothing they can do to ebay

Yeah that's what I meant... but unlimitedsubmissions touched on the point
I was making. I just didn't want to go as far as saying money laundering.

If you can work things out with Paypal, try digital river. However I don't have previous relationship with them so I can't say how efficient they are

      • On the other hand, paypal being cautious of what's not really usual on someone's account gives us peace of mind that their protecting clients even though it means hazzle for us sometimes. Don't worry too much it can be resolved, just coordinate with higher personnel, it's your money anyway.

It's for security measure, if you have $300 then all of the sudden you have $10k in your account and you're trying to withdraw all of that immediately to your bank account what does it look like to them?

    Two words, money laundering.

Best is just to withdraw 20% at a time over a period of time and have some of the money in there to cover chargebacks, refunds and stuff like that.

Outside of a full blown merchant account; (and the added expenses and headaches); there really is no alternative to PayPal.

Its always best to call them prior to launching anything and asking them to put a notation on your account; (then confirming that they did by getting the rep to repeat back to you what he/she notated on your account).

Unless there is some type of notation on your account, the risk department will flag you; as you're witnessing.

This is what I do every time I run any type of launch or sale and I've not had a problem, yet; and I've run a lot of money through my account. I know this works because I also know of friends that have run up to $50K through their account(s) with no problems, as well.

I realize that a merchant account isn't always a bed of roses. At the same time, it has numerous advantages over PayPal, including what should be called the PayPal Slap.

I have three merchant accounts, from two different providers. One of them I think highly of, since (a) their fees are very reasonable (b) the dollar limits are high, and (c) I was approved very quickly. OH, yeah, and (d) they are willing to work with internet based businesses. Implementation in my case was relatively easy.

If would like to check it out, P.M. me, and I will send you the contact information of the person with whom I deal.

I think part of the problem is there is a lot of inconsistency. Sometimes it kind of feels like going through airport security. They're randomly picking and choosing who to search to make sure there is nothing illegal going on.

        Mohammad -

You need to call paypal and explain as many times as you need to in order to get through to a manager or supervisor.

If you call ready to chew them out - you won't get anywhere (but I doubt you would do that anyway).

I've found if I call and I'm patient and friendly and asking for their help - they've been good about helping. Sometimes it has to be kicked "up" from the phone reps but sounds like that's what you need.

Something is triggering an alert - and sounds like different service reps are flagging the account and not realizing it's been done and done....and explained.

Good luck - if you can get through to someone over the customer service reps you can probably get this solved.

99.9% of "flagging" is done by PayPals Algorithm with no human interaction. That other .1% is limitation requests sent by eBay Customer Service Reps.

When you first call, you will end up at a call center in India, they can not do anything for you, at all. They do not have the ability to change anything to your account, just add "notes" to your account. They can not raise your account status, unlimit you, unfreeze you, unban you, nothing.

Or you will reach PayPal tiny call centers in the United States. The Hub is in California, and the other extension of it is in Omaha, Nebraska. Most of the people that you will talk to are college kids who, again, have little to no access, do not care about you, your bills, your food, your starving children, your business on the verge of financial collapse... PayPal does NOT care.

When you call and say "Hey, look, don't freeze my account, Im about to earn like $12,000 in sales tomorrow" they will:

          1) Report you and flag your account for the next transaction... in which PayPal will allow all incoming transactions but will not allow you to have access to it.

          2) Will leave a note, so that when your account IS flagged by PayPals algorithms, it will show up and say "Hey, someone check this note" before action is taken within the next 72 hours.

          3) No note will be left. This is very very very common because of several reasons. Customer service doesn't know how, doesn't feel like it because they don't think anything will happen to you (or don't care), or their note is not descriptive enough to explain to another person why your account has had an increased amount of transactions.

You are prooooobably saying to yourself "Wait, then what happens next?"

Well, PayPal's algorithim then locks down your money and puts it into a holding account that draws interest with yours, and probably a couple million other people.

If you supply eBay/PayPal with your:

          Social Security Number
          Divers License ID
          Home Address
          E-Mail Account
          Phone Number
          Answers to Secret Security Questions
          etc...

ALL WILL BE USED AGAINST YOU.

There is absolutely no reason but "hope" and "dreams" as to why you would provide Paypal with this information. PayPal does Not need this information, and they are not entitled to it.

If PayPal REALLY wanted to make sure You were You, then they would deposit another 3 and 7 cents into your account like you did when you first connected your bank, and then have you reconfirm your account.

If you are expecting more than a thousand dollars a month, then I have no idea why you are using PayPal. Using PayPal as part of the core of your business is pointless.

I think you can scratch social security number off that list if you don't have an EIN. Next year Paypal will start reporting to the IRS. They can't do that without one of those two numbers.

hehe - Imagine having your account limited, and suspended with $XX,XXX in it for the simple reason that they didn't like someone you did business with...someone that you had never sent or received money from...

Luckily we were able to work it out with them, but as a result of it, and them "giving us our accounts back" they now require a decent chunk as a "reserve" and an additional % based on how much was taken in that day...

This is on a couple of accounts that have under a 1% refund rate over the past 2 years, a total of 2 chargebacks, and a healthy history of payments being taken in.

In addition, when the froze the accounts, they were nice enough to go into our personal bank accounts and retrieve the last one or 2 transfers...It was pretty awesome stuff!

In the end though, if you are on the up and up, you can usually show them what you are doing, give them any explanations that they want, and be good to go.

I think that the big issue is that there is legitimately so much fraud that people try to perpetrate on paypal that sometimes innocent people get caught in the crossfire. So, due to the nature of the beast, you sometimes have to jump through a couple of extra hoops, but as long as you are running a "clean business" they usually get it sorted out for you.

Pay Pal put me through hell in may. Hell is a nice way of putting it. My account was limited 3 times. All i did was update a credit card and change my email. Then I was limited. They restored my account after i submitted ssn and required docs.

I was fine for about a week. Then I switched my payment options to bill my new credit card instead of my bank. Limited again on the 16th. This time they wanted a utility bills. Account restored on the 18th. And limited again automatically same day.

I called them up and said look guys what do you want from me. Thumb print and some of my DNA. I am me! what more do i have to do. My account was finally restored after the weekend.

I should also mention i was limited in February. All i did was access my paypal account from a different computer with a different internet connection.

I have a feeling this is going to be an every 4 month thing.

I second with Kay. There's no other way but to be patient in explaining things to them in honest and calm manner. I have not experienced this with PayPal yet but so far, I would say PayPal really has the best secure service when it comes to sending and receiving money so you better take time with contacting them.

This is an interesting thread - I get a reasonable amount regularly through Paypal, around $3000-4000 a month. And I've never had a problem with the account being limited.

My biggest problem with Paypal is that when someone who has subscribed to one of my Membership Programs changes their credit card, or their credit card expires, Paypal automatically cancels their subscription. This is a major PITA.

At some stage I will move on from Paypal purely for this reason - unless of course anyone has a good solution?

There is an alternative to Paypal!

If you live in the USA you can use paymate.com (now being used as an alternative to Paypal by eBay - they have set up in the USA for this).

I used them when I lived in Australia (that's where their head office is and where they grew up!). They pay your money direct by wire to your bank account within 2 working days - you don't need to ask! - they just do it!

The only downside is - and that's for ebook sellers and software too- is they do not have an encrypted link to take buyers to the download page. You must send your buyers a download link in an email. But that's not too hard is it?

For the life of me, I don't know why people complain about merchant accounts. Mine are like $25 a month each as long as I am exceeding the transaction threshold and the rates are an order of magnitude cheaper than the individual transaction fees of Paypal.

If you can't afford that, then I question your ability to even be in business.

Michael, exactly my thinking. I have a merchant account with the same monthly fee rate, with the same advantages. Sounds like we use the same provider. And they had no problem with my internet based business.

To avoid this kind of reaction from Paypal, the best thing to do is to get in touch with them before launching a money making site/product and tell them what you are doing and that they can expect to see more money pour in into your account.

Yeah.. I'm not surprised. Paypal has really dealt with me too. I once sold an item on ebay and as soon as the money got into my paypal account, I received the shock of my life. Paypal limited my account at once... I was asked to add a credit card to remove the limitation and even after adding the card, my account still remains limited. I've sent several emails but didn't get a reply that solves my problem.

It's unfortunate that Paypal feels the need to arbitrarily limit accounts like this. The issue here is that they do not explicitly state what we should do (or avoid) in order to prevent our accounts from being limited, about the only thing we can really do is call them up every time we are expecting a large influx of cash. When we market on the internet, transactions occur automatically and unfortunately it seems like it is very possible for us to get tripped up just by selling to the type of buyer that Paypal doesn't like (this is obviously something we have limited to no control over).

    Here's the secret:

    1. Don't be in the habit of emptying your account by withdrawing down to nearly zero.

    2. Apply for a PayPal debit card and use it regularly for everyday kinds of purchases.

I've talked to more than one "higher up" at Paypal over the years, and this is what I've gleaned from them. This shows Paypal that you're not likely to be scamming. Simple as that. Take it or leave it.

Perhaps this is why my account has never been flagged, as I applied for a Paypal debit card a long time ago, and use it often in lieu of just withdrawing large amounts from my account.
