How many post should be displayed in the blog homepage?

I'm hosting wordpress blog.
Default wordpress is 10 posting per page.
Sometime it seems too much for me because the side bar won't have such long list of information to accompany 10 posting length.
Which means your blog page will look empty at your side bar portion.
But does it really matters to you?
How many posting per page is the best in your opinion?
Thanks.

I think it really is up to you.

Personally, I leave it at 1 per page for two reasons.

    1. Each new page becomes its own "mini-site" that will get indexed separately.
    2. It Keeps my readers focused on one thing. If I have an offer or affliliate links they are more apt to click at the end rather that keep reading.

Not saying my way is the best way...but it is what works for me.

Sometimes it may be better to have 3-5 especially if you are using rss feeds.
That way on a quick websurf you now have 3 topic to catch a visitors eyes vs one.

Bottom line....if you trying to attract visitors that may click cpa | ppc ads then I would go for more. BUT no more that 5

If you are promoting individual products then keep it to 1 per page.

    Just my 2 cents

    I hit 5-10

Usually I include the read more feature too so your visitors can scan quickly down the page for info they will want... but recently I have been leaving that out and the stick rate hasn't dropped...yet

Your posts will still index as individual pages even if you have 10 on the front page...

    Peace
