When doing keyword research, do you guys look at the top 10 competition for your keyword with (exact) or without quotes?

    hi,

    try both of them.
but the [exact] one has more accuracy than the other because it gives you the exact number of searches on that word.

When doing keyword research we look at the top 10, top 50, do plenty of internet research and always follow these rules.

Determine your keywords by category, interested users, comparing users, and buying users.

By reaching the right user, in the right frame of mind, with the right ad, you will see a huge increase in ROI on your campaign. Pick through each ad versus each key word, match properly, and enjoy the cashflow.

Simply look at the top ten results for your targeted keyword phrase. Forget about quotes, or any other type of competition numbers. The only websites that you need to beat are the 10 on the first page.

Install SeoQuake for Firefox and have a look. Analyze your competition with regards to domain age, backlinks, PageRank, etc. This will give you a much better view of whether or not you can realistically rank for a keyword phrase.

Most people don't use this method, which is a shame because it really works well.

I recommend using Market Samurai for this since its keyword research option has always been FREE. It allows you to see factors like SEOCompetition, SEOTraffic, Trends, Searches Volume, Top 10 Competitors, etc as well during the extended trial version.

I also do not use quotes. Allintitle and Allinurl tell a lot, and when you search for your keyword without quotes, you see your competition - top 10 results. Scan that page, if most of the sites have the keyword in title and URL, could be not too easy. If you find some article directory or a very general site (like about.com) on the first page, good chances are you could take their place.
