How did some of you break into Internet Marketing?

Did you use your own site and knowledge, one of the thousands of programs off the net, this forum, or something else?

We backed into internet marketing. We were a brick and mortar location and took a unique concept and automated the process online to be a first of it's kind way of doing things. I have just started posting here recently, but have been reading posts for some time now to get ideas about seo, etc. Great stuff everyone...keep it coming!

Funny... my dad actually started doing some internet marketing, but really never got anywhere. After a lot of research, I saw that to my surprise there were actually a lot of ways to make a legitimate income online.

I started out with "bum marketing" as I am sure many others did. I wrote a ton of articles, submitted them to ezinearticles.com, and made some sales. I wised up pretty quickly, and realized that their is a slightly better way to do things.

However, I still use article marketing on a daily basis to drive traffic to my websites.

I took some of the information from these boards and formed my own plan and business. I figured that if advertising worked for radio, television, and print media then it would also work for the internet. Making a commission from affiliate sales was also beneficial to my income, but a majority comes from Adsense and selling ads directly.

Prior to entering the media biz in 2002, I jumped from one IM course to the next but suffered miserably due to never really taking action.

I eventually broke into affiliate marketing and then cpa as well as creating several products of my own.

My suggestion is to choose ONE strategy that resonates with you, study it quickly and then take ACTION to avoid the whole paralysis thing and "shiny object syndrome".

You're already closer than you might think.

Like some of the old timers, I had this erroneous mentality that the only way to make money online was to have an internet store. I spent I do not know how much money trying to establish an affiliate store with ACTUAL products (which I did not stock) and since no one told me how or where to market it was a total failure. I then began experimenting with other things like list building, blasters, affiliate programs and referral programs. When I started making some decent cash I started saving up and eventually started my own sites... UFFF... Talk about hard work... But then again, nothing comes easy in life. And through IM I have learned that I have to put in just as MUCH hard work and effort as I did in the corporate world.

I got into it after listening to this podcast. I was just trying to figure out how to promote my appliance repair businesses website.

In about 2006, I'd been working online professionally as a web designer and coder for about 8 years. I quit a perfectly well paying job to go focus on web marketing, particularly SEO for e-commerce. The dude who hired me for that job ended up being a co-founder of StomperNet.

I volunteered for any and everything I could do for them until they hired me as a "whatever". Eventually, by halfway into 2007 I was the chief marketing copywriter until later 2009.

Then I quit and went freelance. Here I am now.

I got into real estate because I thought it was going to make me a lot of money.

    FAIL.

So, I got online one day and literally typed in: "how to make money online"

Didn't get my answer on that search, but it created a snowball effect that eventually led to some sweet affiliate commissions and then even my own product.

Never be afraid to invest in your success. No one will do it for you.

Isn't the whole point of Internet Marketing getting OTHER people to invest in MY success?

I have been doing pay membership sites for years. Celebrity first, adult pay later. I basically started dabbling in it to make use of my traffic and generate a little more revenue from existing assets.

The whole, 'leaving no money on the table', b.s..

Nice one indeed. I guess 99% of all fellow warriors started ending up in several GURUs lists, only for figuring out, that they introduce one friend with an incredible offer each day and press frustrated the unsubscribe button one time after another.

I just finished some info, how I would start with only $100, so you might give it a shot (look into my signature, it is the Art of the Start link...)

@mods and fellow warriors, if this against any of the rules just drop me a line! I only saw that thread on the first page and it was what I was thinking about when typing my newbies advice: A struggeling new warrior, that might need some help...

Aside from the ebay stores etc,
My first breakthrough was on several
"Build A Niche Store" sites. (Remember Those).
After waking up every day with cash in my Paypal account, I was hooked,
Until they disappeared into nowhere land.
That is when I decided to get serious about SEO.

The job that I worked at for 33 months closed down. I first started off with the whole IFW thing (Incentive Freebie Websites) and then I found opp after opp after opp and, well, I kinda stuck with the intrigue that maybe I can make a living online.

Software industry kind of found me, and not the other way around.

Back when I was 16, I was trying affiliate marketing, but turns out I'm a horrible marketer. :-) I registered a domain for the main program I was promoting, put up a website, and decided to offer anyone who joins my network their own personalized site as well. So I created a small software script to manage all the replicated sites.

Didn't work at all though, and nobody cared. So I offered the script for free to anyone who joined under me. Still didn't work. Not a single affiliate joined up. BUT... I did end up getting e-mails from people saying, "well, I want the script, but don't want to join your program. Can I just pay you for the script instead?".

And viola! My 10 year software career began.
