FREE HTML Editor - Better than Kompozer!

Looking for a free HTML editor that doesn't mess with your code?

Kompozer is nice, but it does decide to "overrule" you when you add extra code to your pages, meaning everytime you save the page, you can lose valuable code.

I just found another free editor which seems to have more features than Kompozer, but best yet - it doesn't mess with your code:

Trellian WebPage - Software

It's also free.

cheers
Sam

I have a copy of the premium/paid version of this CofeeCup Editor. It was shared by one of our clients. It's a very nice editor.

    Thanks Sam.

I've just downloaded it and it's already way better than Kompozer or NVU.

Browsing the html source is much better (NVU and Kompozer have some strange internal formatting rules).

      Hey Sam,

      This looks very cool, Sam.

As a seeker of cool software myself, I'm always curious about
the "path" that someone takes to find gems like these, unless
it was just getting lucky with a Google or Yahoo search, which
      wouldn't be quite as interesting...

Is there a tale to tell?

      ===
Quick Update... I just got a response to a tech support question
to Trellian, which speaks well to their response time.

I noticed in trying out the software that WebPage does change
      the code
      - turns the tags to all upper case. Trellian confirmed
that this is so, saying that it uses something called the MSHTML
      Editor.

Having been coding with lower case tags for years, I'm not going
to start now trying to read through upper case tags. That says
more about me than the product, which impressed me very much
other than in this one, and for me critical, way.

well I think I can stand the tags in upper case ...as compared to Kom"poseur"
freakin taking my html and reformatting where scripts go... and moving embedded table tags and closing form tags around.

NVU is jacked the hell up. Cost me hrs troubleshooting formatting and function issues, traced back to their gawdawful unreadable code and the apps persistence in moving tags to where it percieved they should GO.

I cant even freakin believe the program does that ... !

        You are right.

        Trellian/MSHTML are wrong.

You should be using lowercase tags if you ever want to transition to xhtml compliance.

          Darren,

Could you elaborate with an Idiot's Guide explanation?

I just used Trellian (before reading your comment) to edit an existing web site, and after uploading it, it did indeed change all my HTML to upper case.

          1. What's the ramifications of not being xhtml compliant?

          2. Can I change the HTML commands back to lower case, either by using my old (SeaMonkey) editor, or some other way?

          Thanks.

Seamonkey has a visual editor. It's a program by Mozilla, same people who make Firefox. It's like the old netscape suite in that it has a browser, email, composer and one or two other things. I like it.

If you are using html and not xhtml, there are no ramifications at all. It just doesn't matter. I still see upper case code on a lot of sites.

Besides that, xhtml is on its way out. Don't worry about it.

Isn't KompoZer the updated version of Nvu???

I'm using it, and it works reasonably well, but it has a few
annoying things it does, especially when it comes to
      formatting.

And sometimes it refuses to let me look at the code.

Nvu was worse though, and often completely unresponsive to my
efforts to get it to work.

But about the new Editor Trellian? Does it work for Macs?

KompoZer does, which is why I use it.

Coffeecup is PC only, or at least it was last time
      I checked...

Thanks, and hoping that Trellian will work for my Mac.

This is posted on the download page:

    Macintosh Requirements: Compatible PC/Windows Emulator.

So, you have to run it on the pc side of your mac. Looks like
it's not gona work for me.

And yes Nvu is dead and has been for some while now. KompoZer
has infact taken up developement where Nvu left off.

    Thanks Sam,
I fight with Kompozer and "editing my code" after I create what it should be.
Kompozer in it's infinate wizdom changes it.

You just sold me on the "doesn't mess with code" feature. I am about to download this one and give it a try.

On Edit: NOPE! I like to use ascii text code and Kompozer and Trillian BOTH convert it to man readable ABC text instead of the acsci equivalent of ABC

I will still give it a try, but it does not solve my problem.

What am I talking about? Go to http://www.wbwip.com/wbw/emailencoder.html and encode an email address. Take the "code" and put into the editor in the SOURCE or HTML mode. Got back to EDIT then back to SOURCE. Trillian changed the code. Kompozer does the same thing.

Does that mean the software can also edit images like PS?

I'll be happy if someone using it can please update me.

The Trellian site reminded me of one of my pet peeves: no clear and obvious indication of the system requirements to run it. It says nothing on the front page for Trellian WebPage, and, even more annoyingly it says nothing to that effect on the download page.

I did get a clue when the download page only included .exe options, but it felt like I had to dig around to find out that there is no non-Windows version, and they don't plan to create a non-Windows version. A single bullet point on the software's main page and I wouldn't have wasted my time.

(Sorry for the off-topic whining, but software sites that assume that all of their visitors are using Windows really irritate me. )

Great to hear so many people are getting use of it!

I don't know details about this program - basically I was just searching for a free program for a client who needed a system that doesn't mess with the code you add.

I'm not sure about details any further than that, but with a quick play around it seemed to be quite a nice system.

Your options let you create the html but you have to actually see the site a different way then komposer works I seem to like the komposer way better because you first create the visual page and the html is created for you. Just in case someone would rather not have to learn html first.

From what I can gather the trellian webpage editor works like komposer but just creates html and nothing extra this is ideal.

I spent ages learning html when we had no choice (middle 90s) if you can use trellian and it doesn't mess up the html code you are really on easy street.

If and thats a big if this web editor does do this then use it and get to your marketing much much faster and make money instead of messing around I love it.
