Um, can someone tell me why sites rank 1st page in google, then fall off after a week?

I'm still learning, I just want to know why this happens.

For example, I'll write an article and it will be posted for 1st or 2nd position on first page, then after a week, it will VANISH INTO SPACE! (well not space but disappear)

Can someone tell me why this happens, is my article completely gone forever, or does Google just hate me.

Thanks.

P.S. Any tips on how to make my article not disappear would be nice 2

    Could be many reasons..

One is your competition probably learned a few things from you and implimented what you did and thus increased their listing. Happens all the time, the search engine wars for top rank has been going on for years..

Some companies actually pay a crew of monkeys to do nothing but sit there and optimize page after page after page to keep those top listings. Course those companies can afford to do this..

    Its sink or swim!

Any new content that is relevant will float for a while and given the chance to sink or swim. Is it good enough to stay there? The good news is that you were put there in the beginning, so you'll find it easy to get back there if you do drop out.

Use basic SEO principals to keep your articles in a good ranking:

    - Submit the article page to social booking marking sites like digg
    - Squidoo, hub
    - Blog comments

    Hope this helps
