Hmm, really Bizarre - What to do??

Today I am trying to clean up some things in my hosting account.

I have some assigned domains that I actually dropped, so I discovered I need to unassign them first, and then I can remove them from the host.

In the process, I realized I have a domain that I'm toying with dropping - it expires at the end of the year and I already have 2 other domains in the same niche doing more traffic wise, etc.

So, I pulled up the domain - which currently is just a squeeze page with sign up to an AR.

Initially I did do some links on the back end - so I decided to look at the backlinks and see if any of them were still showing.

I saw some links that are anchor text - ones I did not make - and the anchortext has nothing to do with the site. lol

The site they are coming from is a directory topics site about skiing - my niche has nothing to do with this, and the anchor text is "ice wine" which - well, pretend my niche is "childrens socks" as an example. No clue where Ice wine meets with childrens socks.

So, this domain is very keyword rich - and I could actually put some real content on the site and sell it - but now I'm wondering if I'd be screwed with "Ice Wine" pointing to it.

Not only that - but there are many of these different directory sites with "icewine" pointing at my domain.

WTF? What do I do with this mess?

lol

Sounds like someone had a domain that was similar to yours, and when they did a mass directory submit (or got it done), they mistyped the URL.

Well, here is the kicker -

      "pretend" my domain is buy-childrenssocks.com

So, in the directory listing it looks like this:

Ice wine - Buy childrens socks and keep your your kids feet happy

Now imagine - there are no childrens socks even called "ice wine" not to mention the anchor text is icewine. If it was buy childrens socks then I wouldn't give a rip.

        Well, now that's really odd..

Maybe you could build on this. I know when my kids were little, sometimes after shopping for socks (or whatever), I felt like some nice Ice wine was in order.

        Thanks,

LOL, I'm going to share the domain later in chat tonight so you can have a look.

Socks were just an example to show how unrelated it is. But yes, if you have children you probably do want some ice wine.

*%#* the wine, brandy please. No ice. The cubes just take up room in the glass.

One of my little (nano?) jokes. When someone is excited about a new baby coming or here, 'Oh you never know. s/he could turn out to be Satan's next representative here on earth.'

I mentioned that one to a neighbor, and she told me that it was almost true already. The kid was serious trouble already.

Did you use a "free" template?

Sometimes those free templates have hidden urls in them. Not just the footer, but also in the sidebar. Some of the sidebar php has links that don't show up on your page but are read by the search engine bots.

I don't know this for sure, but someone told me once that they get the backlink juice to flow from the "icewine" anchor text to pass on to your site where there is a hidden "icewine" url that will ultimately get the juice for the anchor leading to yours and your site.

So all of that backlink juice ends up on the "real" icewine site.

Again, I don't know this. Just heard from a guy who knows a guy...

No, it is actually a single page html - nothing fancy and no links going anywhere but to sign up to the AR. Plain white page, with headline, some copy, a picture I took (my own) and the aweber code.

Doesn't get much more stripped down than that.

It almost seems like someone wanted to mess with me. lol

I wouldn't worry about it too much - Worst case scenario, you'll rank a little better for "ice wine" than you might have otherwise...

As for why they're linking to your site, I have no idea but If I had to guess I'd say that that portion of their site was most likely automatically generated - it was probably just a mistake.

Could be that the person does not really understand how backlinks work and got it wrong.
