Social Bookmarking - How long before results?

Good evening,

Trying again here to get a handle on the social bookmarking. Another thread I started back in June on this subject gave me some great information. Unfortunately, I got caught up in various distractions, and am now revisiting this task all over again.

My question I want clarity on now is how long before you should see an increase in traffic from spending a few hours manually bookmarking your sites? Maybe this is really a question about how quickly search engines do their thing?

It depends on a number of factors such as:
    -keywords targeted,
-competition of other peoples websites for these keywords,
    -the content on your page,
-the quantity of social bookmarking websites you use.

But in some cases can be within weeks, but others months.

Catherine, no one can definitively answer that question, because the answer is different for everyone. You could see results in a matter of hours, days, weeks or even months. No one can say for sure.

The only thing that's definite is promoting your website is like gardening...it requires constant work!

      Thanks to both replies.

David, thanks especially for the reminder of "work." This concept really collides with the whole mindset of quick riches on the internet.

      Will continue "gardening."

You're quite welcome, Catherine. You'll notice that whenever I dispense advice about IM, I mention the "work" aspect. Because the "quick riches" mindset is so pervasive.

I have to admit, I was guilty of expecting lots of good things from social bookmarking when I first properly got into it about 18 months ago.

I started like you explained, by manually submitting (following all the advice for adding your keywords to the relevant parts of the bookmark). I then moved on to a couple of paid services. One was semi manual (which actually worked really well), and the other was 95% hands off.

After 18 months - 12 months of regular, but not daily, bookmarking, I see no benefit from searching my backlinks on the Yahoo Site Explorer tool. Given the amount of work, and the time that has passed, I would expect 100+ backlinks to be showing by now per post - minimum. I have nothing like that from SB sites.

Personally, I have put this strategy on auto with a paid service, and have put my time to better use with articles, forums and blog commenting. If anything comes from it, then it's a bonus.

It seems from my experiences there is no Google love for SB stuff. And as sad as it sounds, I want the big G to love my sites...

It could be anything. Usually when I social bookmark it's the article I least suspect that gets the most social traffic.

My friend has a dating blog and he wrote one article about lazy bodybuilding and that gets a TON of traffic from DIGG.

It's one article that doesn't fit in that gets the most love.

Register and submit to a load of social bookmarking directories. Make sure you bookmark 'other peoples content' too, and NOT JUST YOUR OWN!

This will make it look more natural to the bookmark directories,

Here is a list you can submit too:

      Digg.com
      Diigo.com
      Dizzed
      Fark.com
      Faves.com
      Feedmarker
      Fetch
      Furl
      Google Bookmarks
      Gravee
      Health Ranker
      iZeby
      Jumptags.com
      Ka-Boom-It.com
      Links Marker
      Listible
      Mixx.com
      Myjeeves.ask.com
      myVmarks
      Netvouz.com
      OYAX
      Plugim.com
      Propeller.com
      Rojo
      Slashdot.org
      SmakNews (Women)
      Spurl.net
      swik.net
      Symbaloo

Extra tip- Keep your keywords in your title, but at the same time making them sound interesting too.

one bookmarking site that I use which I favour is digg.com
you can possibly rank within less than 4 hours with digg....

but it also depend on what keywords you have chosen, the more targeted your keywords are the better results and the faster you will rank...

It really depends cos to some it happens in days, weeks or months... If you have the right tools and doing it right, you should see results soon enough. Target the right keywords.

Ive seen an impact on some domains within hours and some it seems to have very little effect - can quite figure out why it is so hit and miss even when it is done the same way each time.

Oh and BTW outsourcing is fine IF they are a good quality company. Find one who also own their own domains.

Try using onlywire.com it will backlink to many popular bookmarking websites with little effort on your part once set up. Thing with bookmarking is you will see a surge in traffic quickly but then go back to normal its a daily thing you need to keep up with
