Offliners - where do you get your most reliable outsource staff?

I just wanted to know as I'm thinking of doing more of this offline stuff. But I don't want to be let down by some douche bag that scampers off half way through a project.

Any tips on this? Do you sign your staff up with a contract?

Hi Nick- I use independent contractors from the Philippines. So a standard Ind. Contract would apply. You can find them on craigslist manila or use a paid service like Agents of Value (expensive though). I also have great experiences on freelancer.com. From there I've worked with folks around the world. I hire the technical stuff out to them. I also have staff in US. I've tried scriptlance, odesk and US craigslist but I've found over the years the mix I have working with us is just right for our requirements. I hope that helps.

Thanks Lisa, so do you contract them or just hire when needed?

It seems you'll need them on a retainer or contract of some kind if you want to keep the clients happy?

For freelancer.com type sites, I hire per job. Normally it is for php scripting, wordpress customization, php installs. Always choose the lowest dollar job quote even if you think you might be paying more than $250. Also, choose the $3 option and "hide bids" so that get the provider to bid prior to the provider seeing other bids.

For full time hires, we use a independent contractor agreement. Have the hires work 40 hours per week, get paid monthly. You really need to keep after these folks daily. Use a project management software and make them use it too. I use 5pmweb it is less expensive than basecamp. Make sure you've done the work at least once or twice and understand the best "flow: of the work, how to get it done quickly. Then create a screencast of how to perform the work. that seems to work best for me.

I've used overseas outsourcers in the past, with some success. It would be nice if I could find someone locally to assist me. You know, someone who I can physically supervise, teach them, etc.

Any ideas how to go about this anyone? Maybe look for those looking to be able to work from home, like homemakers. Or perhaps looking for people who lost their jobs and are looking for something to get them back in the swing of things?

Nick, like Lisa, I use a variety of sources (I tried Agents of Value a few years back and wasn't impressed)...

Scriptlance, odesk, craigslist, guru.com, and now believe it or not - fiverr has some interesting resources for $5!

If you're just getting into it - hire the temp resources - when you need it to control your overhead and once you have the volume of business, you can hire more contract full time and use resources like bestjobs.ph (you can create an acct. there now - even outside PH).

Once you find a good resource - pay bonuses! It keeps them loyal to you

Well, I always went with outsourcing assistants from Asia mostly since I do a lot of work from China (Wholesale products from China) using oDesk, but recently I hired a person in the U.S. that knows both Chinese and English, and the work now is sooo much more efficient and just simply better now. No more excuses, work gets done faster, costs me almost four times more now, but its way worth it. I now feel way more secure having this person and the growth of my company.

Nice dude! Must be great to have someone reliable.. who can speak both languages to help you and coordinate all the work together. How many employees do you still have in China? I'm sure your company will be very successful in the future.

    Hey Nick,

I have found my best guys on elance!

The trick I found to finding the best is to have them work on your projects first before working on your clients sites. I have found some diamonds doing it this way!

If you don't have time to do the hiring process yourself, you can choose to use EasyHire from the same website. We offer to do the hiring process for you and choose the best online worker for your needs.

For project work I use paid gold members of offlinebiz.com (there's a list in the gold members section of people offering services and you can also post if you're a gold member asking for help).

Most of the members here are from the USA, Canada, UK and Australia and they understand what I'm trying to achieve with a client (making them real sales and profits).

Also many are highly motivated to learn how to work with business clients more effectively so you get people who are eager to do a really good job.

      Kindest regards,
      Andrew Cavanagh

I agree with Lisa that whomever you use, you should always know what they are doing.

We are using VisionProject for tracking the work. First, there is a good way of working with documents in the projects. This way it is easy for us to send documents back and forth. Also, it is easy to track the time they are spending on different activities and to summarize this into the different releases or versions of the product.

This way you will also be able to make sure that they don't go down the wrong track and therefore easier be able to correct them.
When you have got a release and (of course, as usual....) you feel that you would like to have something changed, you can use the helpdesk in the system to report this. The issues are added to the same project and the work will also be summarized in the total summary of the cost of the product.

I get a lot of my "workers" from the local college actually.. I've never had a whole lot of positive experience with online outsource firms and such, and I've had better luck finding someone competent, accountable, that I can talk to on a regular basis and even meet up with if needed.

Marketing students make great interns/employees. They get more out of it than just pay... they're also there to learn. That generally means they try harder, and do a better job.

They're a little more expensive, but it's worth it to me.

I am on a tight budget and currently working on launching my product.

I was wondering where you have had the best experience for getting eBooks written at a good price.

I know that you get what you pay for.

    Any advise is greatly appreciated

Try posting a job for an ebook writer at EasyOutsource. Posting a job and hiring a worker is free and you can find workers who are willing to do what you want for a low price.

Just post the job with the amount you are willing to offer and you will get applicants.

Hi Nick, this is Nicole from vWorker.com (formerly known as Rentacoder.com).

Two important tools you can use to protect yourself from contract breaches are (1) escrowing and (2) arbitration. Both tools will ensure that your contractors complete the job to your specification before they are paid. Nothing can prevent a contractor from disappearing, but these two tools will prevent an unscrupulous contractor from running of with your money.

If you have any questions, please let me know. You can also call in to talk to a facilitator 7 days a week, or email us.

I mostly get guys from the Philippines, honest and reliable. You should familiarise yourself with how they do business first and customs like 13th Month and so on.

Actually Greg Jacobs, you can find him here on the WF had a webinar a month or so ago I think in which he outlined some good hints and tips, how to avoid pitfalls etc. You should look that up too, good place to start.

I've used freelancer.com to great effect. Just narrow down the most interesting bids. Then ask loads of questions. The one who comes through that, gets the job.
Employing someone, even if you pay more, in the same time-zone is best too.
